Over Charging?

The voltage meter in the cab always used to sit right around 14 volts. It seems these days to be riding around 15 or maybe a bit higher. Going to stick a DMM and see if the gauge is accurate.

What is considered to be to high of a charging voltage? Any idea's one what would be causes it to overcharge?

TIA

Overcharge is over 14.7 volts, if I remember my tester's gauge markings. A bad voltage regulator causes overcharge.

Try cleaning the battery connections and check the wiring to the alt, mine was doing the same thing couple days ago and this worked for me, everything went back to normal. Hope this helps you.

Thanks for the quick replys. The battery terminals are clean and tight. The DMM reading at both batteries is 14.3 volts. Looks more like 15 or 16 on the factory gauge in the cab.

The voltage regulator is built into the PCM is it not?

So at 14.3 there is nothing wrong with the charging system. Maybe just another accurate DC gauge?

Yes it is

the PCM is what controls voltage regulation. Many people have added an external regulator with good results.

The pcm changes the amount of charge according to temperature as well. However with you being in vancouver i'm not sure it would get cold enough for you to notice the difference on the guage. I know last week mine was reading a couple volts higher than usual, but we were down to -30C at nite and -27ish during the day.It does this to help the batteries charge as it is harder at those temps.
