Oil Loss on steep hills

Greetings -

Have any of you experienced this? The Cummins rep swears he has never had a complaint, and believes I am exceeding the performance perimeters of this truck. My '01 24v HAD the oil breather on the front of the engine, with an overflow cup. Sound familiar? Well, I equipped my truck with Detroit Lockers front and rear to climb insanely steep hills out here in N.Ca. A particular hill we climb, (52 degree slope, appx) is about 300 feet long. Upon descending, all of the oil ran to this breather, was picked up by the timing chain, and flung out the cup. It made a hell of a mess in the engine, as well as on the hill. Upon seeing it, I thought this thing had thrown a rod. I had to have a friend go get oil so I could drive it home. It threw out 2/3 of the oil on the descent. When I took it to the dealer to explain my delimma, he shrugged and called Cummins. The rep claimed this was not in the vehicles capability, so he rode with me to the site to see it firsthand. He watched in amazement as it climbed the hill, then blew all the oil out on the way down. Long story short. After a short discussion, Cummins pulled the motor and moved the breather to the rear "like the old models". That solved my problem, I was wondering if anyone else was experiencing a similar problem. BTW, the rep wouldn't ride up the hill with me. Said I was crazy or something. Never spun a wheel. These things will go just about straight up. Too heavy to flip. ;D

Yes, I think there's aTSB to relocate the breather to the side of the engine. Do a search on it and something will show up. It's been discussed here before.

Re:Oil Loss on steep hills

I had TSB 09-002-02 done on my truck about a month ago solved the oil being sprayed all over the front of the engine by the radiator fan. Dealer was hesitant to do it for me, saying that until the rings are seated that you will get blow by spilling out of the bottle(poor place to put it then in front of the fan to blow it all over) and for 3.2 hours I am glad I didn't have to do it either. Everything on the left side of the engine must come off including the vp44 and ecm to replace the tappet cover for the new breather assembly location. I would recommend the repair as I no longer have to keep emtying the bottle on every oil change.
