oil dipstick

I think you're going to have to pull the dipstick tube to get it out. I assume the remains of the stick slid all the way down the tube? You might try a retrieval magnet, but I don't think you can get enough pull to drag the stick up the tube.

Not sure if your trying to re-use the stick but you could heat a welding rod and stick it in the tube VERY CAREFULLY until you get to the stick, that is if it isnt real far off down in there and then simply pull it out . Just an idea because personally I think the stick is hard to get off .

The plastic tube slips over a tube that is driven into the block. A spring clamp holds the plastic tube to the steel tube. Use hose clamp pliers move the clamp up the tube. The outside of the steel tube is serrated to hold it on the engine. Use a cigarette lighter or another heat source to heat the tube up just a little without burning it maybe a hair dryer would do. Then pull it off. I could not get the tube back on without a little heat.

Just did this yesterday, because the HD plastic handle wasn't HD. I just removed the two bolts that hold the tube in place and pulled the tube out of the rubber grommet to get the remaining part of the dip stick out of the tube. Magnet wouldn't work, because the stub end I could see was the remains of the plastic handle. Once safely removed, I reinserted the tube into the rubber grommet with a bit of force and then reinstalled the two bolts.
Now for the fun part. I went to Dodge to get a new handle and was told that the dip stick had been re-designed and that I would need to buy the tube / dip stick as a unit to the tune of $64. I respectfully declined and went home and called Cummins NW and ordered a new dip stick (couldn't get just the plastic handle) for a total of $4.95 + shipping. The guy at Cummins said they had no record of any redesign and checked the part number against my ESN. Will see today when I pick it up.

Just did this this past weekend. The best bet is to remove the tube. To remove the tube on the 01's there are 2 bolts that hold it in place. A 10mm up top on the manifold and an 8mm just down the tube. Should slide out with a little twisting. Just pop it back in when down, but make sure to twist it in with a good amount of pressure.
