Not happy...

Was checking the fluids,etc.
Just picked the truck Mon. afternoon.

Thought I spotted some oil looking down from the front of the truck.
Got underneath and the front of the oil pan,the lower pulley and area in the front of the motor were covered with oil.

What the hey?
I checked that area when I first went to look at it.Was nothing there then.
It must be a fairly bad leak.
Anybody have any ideas? Been thru something similar?

I'm not going to panic but need to get some insight as to what it may be before I head off to the dealer.
Only 25K miles too. :

Thought it might be the front bolts on the oil pan but it looks like it's coming from above that.

???

Re:Not happy...

Did you check the blow-by bottle? It's mounted to the front cover by a tie-rap and needs to be emptied at each oil change or eliminated altogether.

I had a similar problem. I thought it was a crank seal, but it did turn out the pan bolts. The fan had blown the oil around making it seam like it came from somewhere else.
Happy Hunting ;D

4x4

Re:Not happy...

Commatoze..
Would that be the black plastic "bottle" in the front near the fan?
I wondered about it.
The comment on the fan is right on the mark. Hard to tell where a leak may be when the fan throws it all over the place.

On eliminating the blow by bottle. New hose and chuck it or is it more complicated?
The dealer did an oil change and chances are that nothing was done with the bottle.
At least they put Rotella in.

Thanks!

I'll get it fingered out sooner or later.

Re:Not happy...

Check your pan bolts. I had a serious oil leak under my truck. I went through it and EVERY pan bolt was loose. After I torqed them down, my oil leak went away. I also had to check the front cover too. They were all loose and oil was everywhere. Good luck.

Re:Not happy...

I dont think I have a blow by bottle its just a hose with oil all over it and sometimes drips out of there when I go up big hills and things. I might extend it so it doesn't blow oil all over everything else. Is that possible to do?

Re:Not happy...

Thank you very much Gary, just what I was looking for. This isn't too much of a problem for me but its cheap stuff to do to my truck and if gives me something to do!! Thanks again.

Re:Not happy...

GG when i first got my truck late 99 i had nasty fuel smell in the cab when i stopped or decelled from the freeway and a mech told me about the bottle in the front when i move the tube to the side of the eng the smell went away .this was not a good change for cummins.iwould guess that your rig will get fixed buy dc for the leak though without hassle.they hve had some rear main seal problems also.a buddy of mine got his replaced under war and his is a 2k also. good luck
