No secret, the wipers suck...

Ok guys, it's no secret 2nd Gen wipers SUCK in the cold/snow/ice/slush. There is a large area infront of my face that the wipers miss completely. (doesn't even touch the glass, even when the blades are new). Does anyone have a fix for this? I have a friend at my firehouse with the same problem, but we are at a loss to a solution. Thanks!

Turn the wipers on and turn the truck off when it is at the top of it's stroke. Measure how much room you have between the blade and the window seal. Buy longer wiper blade accordingly. I have not tried this myself yet, but plan to. Should be able to fit a little long blade on there.

My wipers don't suck at all but came new with a "wing" that airflow helps push against the window.
One of the things DC cut out in later years to save a nickle.

that's not the problem, they wipe above and below a blob directly infront of my face. it's like they know the perfect spot to miss so i can't see out the windsheild. I have to either sit up higher or slouch.

Check the wiper arm right at the base, you'll find a lot of ice/snow packs down in there and lifts the arm up when it spins.
Also try to bend SLIGHTLY arm down to give it a little "bow", it will increase the pressure on windshield

Have had the same problem with my 96, tried these and it helped. Especially at speed.

If it is missing in the middle, I would think a shorter blade would more likely help correct the problem.

Longer or short doesn't make any difference, the spring action of blade will keep it on glass.
It can get lifted up with wind and speed, but normally it will always make contact UNLESS there's ice buildup.

Any vehicle will do this.

Rainex make the glass slicker & helps visablilty after you do the wiper arm bend.

I put a set of these on a month ago.

There are separate part numbers for right and left sides.

They work great, even at highway speeds.

I'll second the Bosch blades, pricey but they do work a lot better than the regular frame type wipers.

i have reflex wiper blades (from canadian tire). i don't know the equivalent in the states, but they look just like the bosch ones previously posted. they work AWESOME - as long as you clear the windshield before driving away. if they start free of slush & snow, they will stay that way.

Yep, I have these too. I love them. They are great in the Snow here in Oregon and they also don't lift up from wind while on the freeway like a lot of stock looking wipers do.

Definitely worth the money IMHO.

Whenever my wipers aren't working well, it is due to there being ice packed around the points where the blade is supposed to flex. I just try to remember to knock the ice out before I get going.

If it happens once I am driving, by rolling down my window and grabbing the blade when it is at the top of its stroke and pulling it away from the windshield, I can make it go away. It seems like the force of the blade slamming back down on the windshield breaks the ice free and it works right again.

I just got PIAA wiper blades. They are replacement units but they are supposed to be excellent material and long lasting...they also have a wing on each blade...next time I need wipers hope these really make a big difference over stock.
