Need Help with Starting Problem

Hi all,

Just got back from a 4100 mile trip in 4 1/2 days. The truck decided to develop a starting problem. The starter would just click. Try it a few times and it would start. Did not matter if it was cold or hot. Once, I started the truck after a few clicks and there was a weird extra noise coming from the engine compartment so I tried to shut it off and it kept trying to restart itself. After a few seconds with the key off, the truck stopped running, and when I tried to start it up, it started and acted fine (I think the starter stuck on this time). I think the starter is going but my friend thought maybe the ignition switch is going bad. Any Ideas???

BTW: 4100 miles and used 250 gallons of fuel for a 16.4 average at an average speed of 63 MPH (Driving speed was higher, mostly 70+ mph but have to figure in potty breaks). From Boise, Idaho to Camden, TN and Back. Went Via Northern Route there and southern route back. Hauling an empty car trailer there and a 2001 Corvette Z06 back.

Don Miller
97 CTD, #6, Scotty II, 3K springs

Re:Need Help with Starting Problem

Recommend that you guys with clicking starters make the starter contacts repair ASAP. With the clicking follows starter sticking in start mode. This can lead to fried relays and wiring.

Jerry

I got new contacts at a local alt/starter repair shop. Much better starting. Those **** starter bolts are a **tch to get off.

Re:Need Help with Starting Problem

Ordered my LarryB contact kit today with the plunger. Hoping it will cure the little hard starting problem I have. Truck will spin for 3 or 4 seconds before starting. If I blip the throttle it fires right up ??? Was told it could be my idle being to low.. nope, after I installed my GSK my idle increased 50-100RPM and it still starts the same. With 153,000+ miles on my truck on the original starter I believe this should do the trick.

Re:Need Help with Starting Problem

Dalton is right! If your having starter problems, change the contacts right now. If the plunger sticks, you won't be able to shut it off and you'll end up with fired wires, fried fuel shut-off solenoid or even a fire. I was very luck on mine and disconnected the relay before any damage was done. A new set of contacts and I'm good for another five years. I also now keep a hammer in the truck as insurance.

Re:Need Help with Starting Problem

I would like to thank everyone for all the information. Got the new contacts and plunger. In 45 minutes had the starter in and out and rebuilt. That's Great. These trucks (so far) have been very easy to work on.

Now to get the body fixed after the 2 deer incident last week on my way back from Tenn.

Don

Re:Need Help with Starting Problem

as I did mine with one hand it wasn't that difficult getting it out but getting the thing back in was a litlle more tricky, tied a rope around the starter tossed the rope over the fender and had my 5 year old son hold it in place.

Had a cast on the other arm at the time.
