Need Alt. parts

My Gen. light comes and gos, the volt meter reads 12-14 volts, sometimes a little under 12 volts. 96 CTD w/180K.I really don't want to get a rebuilt, too many sad story's about them. I would like to keep the OEM and try new brushes and bearings. I can't find a source for them. If any one knows of a place I can get them I would really appreciate it. I just tried NAPA, they didn't have them.

Thanks
Floyd

Try tapping on the alt when it acts up. If it starts charging, the brushes are probably worn out. Mine did the same thing. If you have a local alternater/starter rebuild shop, thats the place to go. I got brushes locally for like $15.

When the heaters kick in on a cold morning, mine drops down and then comes back. This I would say is normal. This isn't by chance what your talking about is it?

Most electrical repairs shops should be able to source for you.
I got mine locally at Northwest Power Systems in TRF, MN. Very good prices, too.

edit: added web link. Not much, but it gives the phone number

OK the update, I hate it when you give advice then never hear back if it worked or not. I got the brushes and bearing from Fixinrams It included written instructions. The rebuild went well, not perfect, couldn't get the shaft out of the rear housing, didn't want to beat on it too much, so couldn't replace the rear bearing. The instructions said it seldom needs replacing anyway. I did notice that the top slip ring was worn alot more than the bottom one, anyone know why? No left over parts so I was excited about that. Put it back on the truck and went for a test drive, all seamed to work well. I love it when I don't screw things up.
Thanks for all the replys.

Was the slip ring "worn" or was it just a bad casting and not machined enough. I have seen that before and this causes the brush to wear faster.

I beleave it was worn. The grove was the same width as the brush, about 1/64" deep, my eyes aren't what they use to be, the bottom slip ring seemed to have no wear. I remember seeing a web site that sold the rotor for about $45 I can't remember the web address. I would much rather keep the OEM alt. than get a rebuild. Keep those cards and letters coming in.

Thanks again for the help.

Unhappy Need more help

OK I brought this back for more inputs. As i said I replaced the brushes and bearing. I get good voltage but my GEN light still comes on. Not all the time everything will be fine then I will look down and it will be on, stay on intill I restart the truck the it may or may not come on. I would like to hear from anyone that this has happened to and what you did to fix it. I really don't want to get a rebuilt alt. but if I have to I will.
Thanks to all.
