Is my truck a freak?

Before anyone asks, it's HAND calculated although the overhead is pretty close to being the same.

Anyways, my new 99 bone stock quad cab short bed 4x4 auto gets what I would consider ridiculously good mileage. My best to date coming home from Tennessee to NY was about 21.4 cruising anywheres between 70 and 75.

Coming through the mountains in WV? 19.4.

My average for city driving you ask? 18.7.

Isn't this pretty good mileage for being bone stock? I haven't even started to flush the fluids from the axles, tranny, etc... yet. The tires are 265/75/16's and those numbers listed are corrected as well. Now, without trying to sound too greedy, what can I expect out of a box?

You're right on par with my father's 01 6 speed. His is a 1ton 4x4, though. He pretty much hates me because of this truck. Better mileage, and the body looks better. Gotta love it...

I think these mileages are fairly common for stock or slightly modified second gens. I get about the same, and it got better after a new VP44: I started getting 23 highway, 19-20 commuting. All hand calculated, I don;t even have an overhead computer.

I was just surprised, as I've been subscribed to the gas mileage thread for quite some time. At least long enough to have had my truck I sold back in december or so. Anyways, they all seem to be having issues breaking 20 on the highway it seems like and I more or less "demolished" that without really trying. I wonder what the egg under pedal approach would do?

Leave more money in your wallet for the mods that will eventually lower the fuel mileage but put a big grin on your face?..

I think I like the way you think! I'm actually getting ready to go pick it up from her Rhino lining and tint job. Can't wait!

My 95 got 23 on the highway 20 around town it was an auto with 3.50 gears. My 96 gets 20 on the highway 18 around town. It's an auto with 4.10 gears. A guy at work tells me the auto's have a better final drive ratio then the standards and therefore autos will get better MPG? Anyone know anything about that? First I have heard of this. I always thought you would get better mileage with a standard transmission because of fewer RPM's being wasted through torqe converter slippage?

Once lock-up is achieved it's a moot issue, though I don't know about the final drive.

I'm getting 22 and keeping quiet about that. I was thinking of getting something to increase the fuel mileage but I'm afraid I'm maxed out and any add-ons will just be a waste of money.

I've been thinking of getting that max mileage module for my dad. After seeing how well my truck does he wants to try for better than a best of 16. If he's satisfied we'll probably end up with two of them. A few mpg can add up pretty quick.
