for one, it puts a quart more fuel in the tank.

it also adds lubrication to the fuel which theoretically should improve the longevity of the injectors and pump.

Does that help with mpg, I don't kno squat about diesels this is my 1st, I use to put a little marvel in my showerhead for that reason, just lubrication, it did nothing for mpg, is it the same principle?

Reports indicates it help the 2006 and prior diesel engines with lubcity since they went to untra low sulfur diesel. I use it and this is what I found:
* after the first couple of fills the sound of the engine is actually quieter than before.
* as time went by, my mpg increased overall by 1 mpg. but this can be due to driving conditions and style could have change, ect... My friend with a Ford 6.0 said he showed 2 mpg increase. But normally it doesn't increase mpg. Driving habits do.
* it is to lube the fuel since sulfur use to do this and is not in the system present days ( lubes lift pump, injector pump and injectors), and by sound (no instrument but by ear) it got quitier.

Attached is a study done a while back and is a good write up. It might help understand.

Just an FYI. That is an old study. So the prices have changed and some of the products are no longer available. Though WMO doesn't rate very high, it's free fuel. I wouldn't consider using on my 24 valve though.
