'02 3500 6x6 6spd 3.54 gears Edge w/o wire 275 injectors 4 inch straightthru exhaust BHAF
#2 diesel, combo in-town and highway driving, but highway driving is in mountains, and most driving is approx. altitude 2000 feet or more --
@1000 miles: 15 mpg
@5000 miles: 18 mpg
@7000 miles: 20.5 mpg
Breaking in nicely. By my calculations, I should be getting 103 mpg at 100,000 miles -- assuming y'all are correct in telling me these engines aren't broken in completely until then.

Re:Mileage
Ya, I expect so -- half 'n' half, maybe -- part break-in, part light bombing. I have seen a "substantial" increase since the initial improvement with the bombing, however. I took a lot of care during the initial 1000 mile break-in -- variable speeds and loads, etc. That may've helped.

I have a pretty light foot, except when I don't ;D -- that's a factor, too.

GP

I kind of baby it if anything. Tried running with and without overdrive. Didn't seem to matter much, maybe 1 mpg. Thanks for reply.

Re:Mileage
I had some bad luck with my truck a little while ago, (long story) and had to rebuild the engine. After the rebuild, I was complaining of using about 3-4 litres oil in 7000 kms(4300 miles). The rebuilder said it should have settled in by 8000 kms, but didn't. Long story short, I kept driving and, finally at about 40,000 kms(24,000 miles) it settled down to normal. The Cummins rings must be extremely hard to take that long to seat in. I've also noticed that my mileage is A LOT better if I keep my revs on the highway at, or under 1900 RPM. Over that and I see an amazing increase in fuel use. It kinda sucks only going 65-70 MPH, but with fuel prices where they are, that's the sacrifice I'm gonna make!
Re:Mileage
A newbie to CDT and this forum. Bought a used '01 2500 last month...120k ( no towing) miles (looks and runs great). The first 1100 miles I averaged 15.2 mpg. Commuting and in-town 65%, Towing 25% and highway 10%. Moving up from a gas-hog Dodge Van I'm not unhappy but wish mileage was a little better.
