Looking to get into a Cummins

Hey guys i'm new here and looking at getting into a dodge. I found this 1999 Dodge 2500. It is 4x4 with 111,000 miles on it for $7995. If i do get it, i plan on swapping an NV4500 into it, maybe putting a chip and hooking it up with a FASS. Anybody have any feedback pros/cons about the 24V Cummins? Thanks guys, -John

The 24v is a great engine. You will find the weak link to all of it is the injection pump. I still would not let that keep me from buying another one. Sounds like a fair price.

That is a great deal. I payed 12000 for my 98.5 and had 156000 miles. Here in Idaho cummins hold closed to book. I put a edge ez chip and 4" exhaust, the truck runs great. I would not past that up.

Check for cab rot, and if you can check the lift pump pressure, if it's low I'd take it to a diesel mechanic to see if the injection pump has any damage. Other than that seems like a good deal, auto's seem to fetch less money but that's a fair price for the mileage and apparent condition!

And if you're really worried check for the "dreaded" 53 block, most people who have it don't tend to think it's that big of a deal but you'll get a group of guys around here who talk it up like the end of the world . If it does have a 53 check to see if it's already leaking coolant, if not don't even worry about it!

Another weak link is the nv4500, especially if you are increasing hp & torque. That tranny can't handle any more power than stock without breaking something. INMO, I'd put a nv5600 in it or wait to find a truck with the 6speed already in it.

Yeah I thought that $7995 was a steal for that low of miles!!
(Saw a 98 on Craigslist for $8000 that had almost 400k )

How exactly do I check if it is a 53 block? I've heard about those being "bad" but have never heard an explanation of why!!!

So the NV5600 is the six speed? I wasn't sure if there were two different versions of the NV4500, but I would MUCH rather have a six speed.

What exactly is meant by cab rot? Just rust on the cab?

Thanks for all the replies

Sometimes a sticker will still be on the valve cover giving indication of a 53 block. To confirm check the block serial # on the bottom of the motor, front driver side. All is good w/mine.

Hey guys just another quick question.
Would the NV5600 be a basically bolt up sort of project or is there more to it than that? Obviously I would have to cut some sort of hole in the floor but other than that will it just bolt up to the engine or will i need to change some things like the flywheel, clutch, crossmembers etc...?

Its the ecomony. And lets face its a 10 year old truck. I have been looking around. Everywhere you look the 90's truck are dropping fast. A 96 is on Ebay close to me and it could sell for 5g. But higher miles 196k and some rust. Oh and if you pust a Fass system on it. And a Edge get ready for Pump real soon. Also try to get the G56. But I am sure they are pricey
