Looking at buying a truck, need some advice

Looking at my first diesel. Just looking to have a truck to tow my 7k trailer once in a while, and just to have for the next 30 years, plan to keep it stock

I've also posted at Cummins Forum, I guess we will see which forum ends up being the most help!

2000 Cummins quad with automatic, short bed. Outside looks nice I'd give it 8/10. Interior is ok, don't see any hint of rust. cracked dash and a few small tears on front seats. This is a interesting situation and I feel you should read all the way to the bottom and then tell me what you think.

Known problems:

1. Oil leak on front of ]. I've heard of several things it could be (PS to vacuum pump, oil pan gasket, crank seal, or seal inside gear cover???). puke tube?
2. Has P0336 and P1690 code and has ABS light and ebrake light on. So far it seems all these are easy fixes (new sensors). True?
3. No air coming out of vents on floor or top vent. I read about this and found out it might be in default defrost mode due to vacuum line or bad check valve? I think I could hear the fan motor running. Didn't know to check the window vent to see if A/C works, I will have to do that if I go back to check again
4. Auto trans fluid looked very light red, and had minor black stuff when wiped with rag. Basically, not bright red light it should be. Concerns there?
5. I didn't get to do a cold start, (I will ask him to allow me to do a cold start before even thinking about buying it)
6. coolant, it was a little low in the reservoir but coolant seemed clean
7. I am aware of a very expensvie issue with vp44 injector pumps due to failing lift pumps. I'd like to be able to hook up a gauge to the lift pump to see if at least its over 10 psi at idle, because if I know idle pressure is no good then I can use that to get him to bring the price down a bit (please provide some detail, none of the threads I search/find tell me if I can use a actron FP gauge with Schrader valve)
8. Could not find the block number (I might have missed it but I will check again for the 53)

Now here's where it gets interesting. The guy says he is a salesman, so right away I'm making sure to be extra careful and make sure he isn't leaving info out, and sure enough he did. In addition to all the problems above, the SPEEDO and ODOMETER DO NOT WORK!!!!

He advertised the truck as having 120k miles and selling at $8k, that is a lie, he says it was his grandfathers (who has passed away) and he cannot tell me how long it's been out. The thing could have 250k miles for all I know.

Should I offer 5-6k or walk away?

Also, I'm not afraid to fix all these things myself. I do work on all my vehicles, just never had a diesel.

Around here your ODO needs to work for inspection every year.
They may have documentation on when it last had mileage notation, like dealer work ETC as well.
Looks like a solid truck, I assume 2wd from the looks of it. It could easily be worth 8 grand.
Any work records?

Yeah, I am trying to figure out how to obtain a service history on the truck. If I call up a local dealer with the VIN, will they give me the history or will they stonewall me? I'm confident there will be service history because they didn't seem the type to do the work themselves. There is no inspection required in this state.

Is there another source? I currently cannot find an online source that actually gives me any info. This is what I'm working on tonight. Try calling a dealer tomorrow. I figure if there's good records, I can guessimate when the odo broke and about how many miles are on it.

If anyone can help with that, I'd appreciate it. Also, if anyone can run a carfax that would help a lot as well!

Your trying to tell me there was NO service paperwork with the truck?
No oil change papers, no work done at a shop, ETC.
IF I have any work done at my buddies shop the VIN.#, date and mileage of the truck is on my bill.

Get a carfax (or similar) report - maybe it will have mileage on there from some source. You said there is no state inspection in your state, but maybe one was done in another state and the truck came to your state after that.

Re. fuel pressure and an Actron gauge - maybe this? https://www.genosgarage.com/product/...d#.VLsWPiyCDGs

New Information

I happened to find the dealer that the truck was serviced at and I have a picture of it here. From the numbers (average miles per year ~7800) it looks like the speedo stopped working sometime around June 2016, so assuming they didnt suddenly double/triple/quadruple their mileage per year, it shouldn't be any more than 130k miles.

It also looks like he had oil changed about every 5k miles (at least when he had it changed there)

Holy cow, the recent oil changes were near $100 at the dealer!!! Can you tell me what that $2831.87 bill on 02/07/11 was for??? or if anything else on the service record is of interest?

recently had air and fuel filter replaced, so that is a plus

So with this new info, what would you offer realistically?

Another truck

What do you think about this one? Basically looks brand new.

He wants $13k for it but kbb prices it at $10k? I would agree with the 10k price.

-------------Ad starts here ---------------

For Sale 2001 Dodge Ram 2500 with the 24 valve cummins diesel, 2wd, automatic transmission, with 104,000 original miles. It is the Sport Edition and has the club cab doors on both sides. It has a tonneau cover with carpet in the bed. This is a non smoking, non pet, very nice diesel truck for the age I would rate it at a 10 for the condition

Asking $13,500.00

I figure I can pull off the 30 year plan with my 1stgens. Based on the three 2ndgens I've wrecked out, and a 4th that I quickly sold again... they just aren't up to the test of time.

U2Slow, ya can't wreck 'em and expect 'em to last the test of time.

I've got 380,xxx on my 95. Now granted that's only 22 years, but it's only let me down a couple of times, and one of those was my fault for not checking a hose that was loose.

They were 'wrecked' before I got them.... largely from time and poor build quality. I merely put them out of their misery.
