Re:looking to buy a 2000 high mileage cummins....

It will have the 24 valve engine.
As far as the price goes, it's about middle of the rad price. It really depends on the condidtion of the truck. If it appears to be well taken care of, I believe it would be worth that much. You might consider looking at new truck lots for a 2002 that hasn't sold yet. I saw a dealer selling 2002's for just over 23,000. Brand new.

If you buy it at a Dodge dealer, have the service department check the fuel pressure for you. If it is low, have them change the lift pump before you take the truck. Low fuel pressure can cause injection pump failure later down the road. A 24 valve guy can jump in here and tell you what the fuel pressurelimits are.

Check the rear brake drums for gear oil, if the rear axle seal os leaking, you will be able to see it on the backside of the rear hubs. Check the transmission for any visible leaks, especially around the driveshaft.
Ask for any maintenance records they might have on the truck.
Check the engine for any visible leaks as well.

The first thing I would do is have all the fluids changed as soon as you get it. Have the engine oil analyzed by a lab to make sure everything is in good shape internally. http://www.blackstone-labs.com/ is one company that does that type of oil analysis. Do not use FRAM filters. THe best thing to do is find a local Cummins dealer and get the Fleetguard filters. That is the only filter my truck had ever had on it. With the exception of one time when I bought a Wix filter.

If the truck has a limited slip differential, make sure they add the proper amount of limited slip additive from Dodge. Otherwise, the LSD slutches will grab and can cause the rear diff to fail. Too much of the additive, and it will act like an open differential.

If it is a manual transmission, the fluis specified is Castrol Syntorq(not Syntec). It is quite expensive but that is what is specified. There are several synthetic lubricants available for the tranny, I just don't know what grades they recommend.

Remember, you still have 22000 miles of warranty left on the engine. The Cummins diesel comes standard with a 5 year/100,000 mile warranty.

Just keep the fluis changed and at the proper levels and don't go too crazy with the HP enhancements and the truck should last a long time.

Just make sure you have as much info about the vehicle as you can. Is it a 24v? 4/4? auto? things like that. Then go to

kbb.com
edmunds.com
nadaguides.com
Now these are not price "bibles" but can give you a good idea of what you should expect to pay for a vehicle. Plus condition of the vehicle will mean alot to. My thoughts are if the outside is trashed then you can bet that the vehicle probably wasn't maintained like it should have been.

good luck on your car buying
thumper
Go to www.traderonline.com and insert all the information in your search for a 2000 Dodge. Search anywhere beyond 300 miles. Make sure you go to advanced search after filling in the begining info. Enter in advance search, Diesel Fuel, type of drive, two or four wheel, auto or standard, etc. Click seach
and have a look at want else is out there and want their worth.

My sons truck has 201K on it now, its a 96 and he says its getting better all the time. Changed one fuel pump and had the tranny rebuilt. Its a auto extended cab long box.

Dave

Re:looking to buy a 2000 high mileage cummins....

no problem, i got 3 cummins', a 94 with 455 000k, a 95 with 240000k and a 98 with 260 000k, the engines are hardly broken in, 800 000 plus is where you might have to look at engine work. My 94 has the 455 000k and the engine has never been touched, the only thing it needs is a pump, the injectors were checked and are putting up the pressure as if they were new. So no worries with the engine there's just the other stuff ie tranny, (which at that km should be okay) and structural ie dents rust or what ever, best of luck.

Re:looking to buy a 2000 high mileage cummins....

I agree with everything gitchesum posted. But I would sure check it out about buying a new 2002 if you can find one. Some guys have bought them fully loaded for 28,000. I sure wouldn't buy a used one at that price if I could get a new one for a little more. Interest rates might be a lot better on a new truck, making it that much better.
Michael
