Lifespan of stock exhaust?????
Lifespan of stock exhaust?????
I'm thinking about some kind of exhaust upgrade in the very near future. I tried to run straight pipe but it is just way too loud for my taste. I was thinking about a high performance muffler or Genos muffler elimination kit but I don't want to spend the money just to have the stock pipes rot out in the next year or two. Summit Racing now has a complete 4" turbo back system for $300.00 and I am also looking at that. It's the cheapest system I have seen yet.
So, my question is, do I need to worry about my stock exhaust rotting out under normal driving conditions or are most of you getting many years out of yours??
Re:Lifespan of stock exhaust?????
Both my trucks are 95's and both still have the original, except for the cat converters. They seem to have gone missing. Otherwise everything else is from the factory and still seems solid. ;D
Re:Lifespan of stock exhaust?????
My 91 had 122,000 before the muffler fell off the tail pipe was shot also. Year wise was about 6. Now my 98 only had 94,000 when the muffler fell off but the tail pipe is still ok. Year wise 4.5 years.
Re:Lifespan of stock exhaust?????
Well, Alleyyooper, having lived in the beautiful state of Michigan in my younger years I believe that some of your situation would be attributed to the salt and sand that is put down every time it snows (which is much more often than here in Virginia). And realistically, 94000 miles still isn't that bad for exhaust parts.
Before getting this truck, I had a 2000 CTD which was obviously used for hauling all over the country and the exhaust looked really bad. It only had 58000 miles on it.
I am thinking that I might just get a complete aluminized system and then I won't have to worry about it at all.
Thanks for the replies....

Yeah, I'm in the south too, no salt, no sand. But when I think about it. The thing outta look better than it does. I hope I can get another year or so out of it. ???
Re:Lifespan of stock exhaust?????
I talked to a guy the other night with a 99,255k on the original here in the salt belt. The tail pipe is rusted and split but other than that it's solid.I've talked him into getting a complete 4" system, then maybe a fueling box, then injectors, and then.......

Up here in the salt belt, they are lasting quite a few years.I have seen 7+ years on some of them. Check your warranty information booklet along with your owners manual. It seems to imply that the exhaust is warrantied for lifetime on the CTD for noise regulations. I could be wrong, but when i read it ,seemed to say if you're muffler fell off for whatever reason ,not excluding rust, and creating a louder emission that it would be replaced for life. I believe that could include any part of the system. TGCTD ??? ;D

Re:Lifespan of stock exhaust?????
Norhtern canada here! Lets see my 02 well the exhaust fell off the day after I got it! As for lasting my dad had a 2000 that he sold to a friend of ours well damnd if the thing didn't rot off 3 months after so he gave the guy the stock exhaust off my 02! I dunno if it was a lemmon or not cause the same guy bought my 99 and it was stock and the exhaust was still mint! No idea how long they will last now both my dads 2000 and my 99 saw the same conditions so I guess its just how good of quality the metal was in your pipe!

Re:Lifespan of stock exhaust?????
Sandy and salty roads have probably the biggest influence on how long a system will last, but don't forget about trip lenghts. If you drive mostly short trips, condensation that doesn't get dried out will kill an exhaust system toot sweet. Mine gets started in the morning, and it's not uncommen to not shut down till night, and 5 or 600 miles later. 2001, 245,000 miles, and system still looks good.
Re:Lifespan of stock exhaust?????
;D All I can say is I drove both of my trucks (91 & 98) the same since the only differance was style and rear gear ratio and what state of tune D/C did. 27 miles one way to work, very rarely did I do short hops in either trucks. It was the front weld where the pipe entered the muffler that failed on the 98's exhaust.
;D the 98 has been a love >
hate relationship. When my 03 gets here it will be thank god and D/C it's gone.
;D Al

Re:Lifespan of stock exhaust?????
Here in the Illinois salt even with most of my driving being under 10 miles to each stop I have 100,000 on my 99 2500 with not a spot of rust. I keep checking just so I can replace it without feeling guilty. The one part I'm waitin for and it's gonna last a life-time
