Initials on Cab
LT in GM-speak is "Lame Truck"
And since Dodge has a "Sport" model of our trucks and choose to adorn it with badges that state same, I don't think "Sport" is part of the SLT. My Expedition was an XLT. I don't think it was a "Xylophone Long Tart"...
LT could be "Light Truck" since that's what our are considered. But I don't buy that either. I just think that the pin-heads in Detroit sit around and put letter combinations together that sound good. Sure it STARTED with GT and GTO and such but today? Nah.....

I'm not sure what the letters stand for, but I would venture to say that Dodge borrowed from Ford on this one.
Ford...............Dodge
XLT.................SLT
Lariat..............Laramie
I'm sure someone will come up with more.
Manufacturers do it all the time.
Mazda RX7, Mercury Cougar XR7
Nissan 280Z, Chevy Camaro Z28
Ferrari GTO, Pontiac GTO
There's one that's wierd. Mercury Cyclone and the GMC Syclone. GM had to spell it that way (with the S instead of C) because Ford owns the correct spelling.

The designation GT comes from Gran Tourismo, a racing series for stock spors cars in Europe. Somewhen Ferrari built a GT for the public and anoter one for the races (different engine, chassis and gearbox) which was basically countervening the rules of the GT series. When they didn't get an homologisation (proof that the car entered in the competition was equivalent to the car publicly available) they threatened the GT officials in Italy to enter the next events with their cars painted blue. (French national race colours)- So the GT became homologised- the "O" in GTO since then stood for "Gran Tourismo Omologato" - (omologato is italian for homologised).
Lots of other makers simply used the GT and GTO designations for their top of the line sports cars since then.
Just some trivia..

Laramie
Wyoming sounds good. Anything out west to compliment the leather interior maybe. Same for the lariate from fomoco. Remember the corenthian leather that Chrysler used to use. There is no such thing. Just leather. Means a lot to some but nothing to most.
Im going to have to go with the official meaning being the Sport Luxury Trim...Just b/c my last vehicle was a Chevy Tahoe LT and i know for a fact that the LT stands for Leather/luxury trim.

The RX7 was named such because RX-6 does not roll off the Japanese tongue well. RX enthusiasts can confirm that one.
Nissan 280, well that's easy... displacement of the engine... 240z was a 2.4, similar to most European manufacturers and their model names.
Z28 = 8 cylinder (Remember the 4-popper Cavalier Z24?
)AlpineRam nailed the GTO...
Olds 442 - 4 barrel, 4 speed, dual exhaust. (They tried to explain it in the 80's as 4-cylinder, 4 valves per cylinder, 2 camshafts)
my redneck buddy told me the "Sport" on my truck means "Sounds Pretty Obnoxious Right Thar" (I like Scares Poor Oldfolks RouTinely)
SLT = Sounds Like Trashtruck
(my neighbor said it sounded like one)

I will say this though..the Z/28 was a production code. GM has often times referred to performance models as their production code. L-88, L-82, Z-06, LT-1, LS-6, etc...the list goes on.
As far as the Cavalier goes, that's just the marketing people trying to improve sales by conjuring up an old performance moniker.
