I know i shouldn't have. But i notched my heater core box just a little. And i had to do was pull the hoses off in the engine bay and pull the dash back and my old heater core was out. I put some HVAC tape of there trimmed area. It really cut alot of time out of the project. I had it done in a matter of a few hours.

Good Luck!

Make sure you get the heater core with the swivel tubes.

Also, on my 97 there was one more bolt holding the HVAC box on. It was on the firewall side. Cant miss it. If the box doesent come off of the firewall easy, then you have another bolt.
One other thing guys that I forgot to add.
When you get the box off the firewall, take a hacksaw and cut the 2 old copper supply tubes going to the heatercore. It makes it easier to get the old one out. The new one slides in easy the old one took some prying.

Dieselman 2300,

It looks like you are in demand at the moment cause I need to see the write-up on the Heater Core R&R. I'm blowing anti-freeze through the vents and my windows are getting fogged up. Not pretty!

The last time my windows fogged was 25yrs ago while at a drive-in !!!

I sent you a PM. I'm hoping to do mine this weekend. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Could you explain where you cut the box, and did you get a core with the swivel ends?

Dieselman 2300,

Thanks for the article. I sent in my registration info. to TDR and will be joining the group soon.

Between TDR an DTR, I should have most if not all of my Dodge Cummins questions answered. Thx

I cut the old ends of my heater core while it was still sitting in the heater box. Then i notched the box just enough where the new heater core with swivel ends will drop into place. It wasn't much at all and it prevented me from pulling the entire heater box.

How did you get the heater core tube hold down off without pulling the box? You have to pull the box off the firewall about 2 inches to get to the one screw that holds the tubes down, considering the hold down is UNDER the cowl.
