How cold should the cummins start withuot plug in

I don't know if both batteries need replaced at the same time being as I know a lot of people that test theirs and replace the weaker one. I have had trouble starting mine in -20*F without plugging in but it did start. I run regular rotella 15w-40 and I don't know if a oil heater would be necessary seeing as my block heater heats everything if given time. And for the record the biogger injectors are harder cold starting.
If your truck doesnt have ANY fuel leaks, will keep a prime, both grid heaters work, have GOOD batterys and run synthetic it will start in the coldest of days.
Oh yeah, I am also running lower compression on my truck and it doesnt have ANY problems starting.

Just a small bit of info on C* vs. F*. 0*C is freezing like 32*F is freezing. -40*C is the same as -40*F. Look it up on Google for metric translation to standard. Just some useless info.

Hello Colo River Ram, I am in Gunnison. Thank goodness it warmed up this week. Had a low of -10 and a hi of 16above. I can handle that. Hey I see another one here from Montrose, I think it was R U RAMMIN2. If I got rhat wrong I am sorry. We ought to start a west slope chapter.
Thanks BIGBEN2004, I remember that now.

I figured as much...I did a job in Crested Butte back in my constructive days..first thing i noticed when i got there was all of the doors on the 2nd and 3rd story houses with no porch or landings...the first big snow storm I found out why!! I will do some homework on that frame mtd. diesel fired unit for you..

If you are looking at buying a Espar, (diesel fired boiler) Greg Landuyt has them for the cheapest.
I priced them at all of the places I could find.
I will be installing mine this weekend. I am putting mine it the engine bay where the passenger side battery is. I have read on here that when you install them on the frame they will eventually break, from all of the road debris (water, snow, rocks).
The Espar D5 with 7 day timer was just under $1100 shipped.
His website is.

Funny thing is, the Espar is now an option from Dodge on new CTD.

My 2nd Gen starts reliably down to -20 F running AMSOIL Synthetic. Cycle the grid heaters twice, the 2-new Diehard Platinum Group 34 batteries crank it plenty fast. I agree with those that say plugging will be easier on the engine, but as also stated, sometimes it's not an option. Ice fishing and snowmobiling trips to northern Maine usually do not have access to electricity. I do carry a 1000 watt generator and battery charger for use in "emergencies". Plug in the block heater for an hour or so and put the charger on to top off the batteries. Had to do this a few years back when we had -34 F on the morning I had to come back home.

Thats good to know that the 1000 watt gen will run the block heater. Thanks to all for the help. I will check a few more things, I think I may have a priming issue. When I open the water drain on the filter housing, nothing comes out, and I know its not clogged, so I am thinking something is leaking somewhere. I will check the lift pump and overflow. As soon as I figure out how.
Yes Colo river ram, I know what you mean. Up there in C. B. they used to have 2 story outhouses. I cant imagine.

Boys, she fired right up a -9 this AM without heater grids, but plugged in for 3 hours, regular Rotella.
I might have some issues tonight, I really need to get those stupid Grid Heaters working.....

Well I just got mine started at -15 F without being plugged for 2 days.
Cycled the grid heaters twice and it turned over a bit slow but started firing almost right away. It took off and rattled a bit. It took almost a minute for the oil pressure to come up. I'm not to worried however as the oil pressure is at the end of the line.
I couldn't get my dogone generator started so I'll have to go look at it again. I guess the 5-30 blend didn't work after all. I'm goin gto try 5-20 full synthetic this time. Definitely going to look at converting it to electric start.
