Heater Hose Routing

This is about a '99 Ram Cummins. I have 2 molded hoses coming from the heater core. They are about 12" long. One runs to a metal duct, down to the water pump inlet area. It then has another piece of hose about 2" long. The other runs to the head. Has anyone done away with the molded hoses & simply connected a foot of hose to the engine head & run a single hose completely to the water pump inlet? If so, were there any problems with the hose collapsing/kinking from the bends? How did you rout the hose to the water pump to avoid heat of the manifold or turbo?
Thanks in advance...
