Was wondering if any of you guys have replaced the factory headliner in your truck.

The previous owner of my truck mustve been a heck of a chain smoker b/c the liner is all stained by smoke.

How much are new liners and how big of a pain is it to install one?

any help would be great, thanks

I am waiting on this also, somehow smoke and dirt has gotten on mine in the last 254,000 miles. Some sucker must have smoked in my truck

 

I'm not sure on our trucks, but a buddy had to replace his in his s-10, and he said it wasnt too hard or too expensive. I'm also interested b/c I have some kinda build up on mine also. Lets see what anyone else has to say.

There really isn't much to the replacement process, with the exception of taking off all of the interior trim without breaking the stuff. As far as cleaning goes...might be worth a try, but...you have fabric, ususally glued to a foam rubber that is attached to cardboard. It would be a better than cardboard box stuff, but still cardboard. I would guess that a thorough scrubbing following by a thorough drying process would be ok, but it would really have to be dried thoroughly. The other problem you could run into would be the separation of the cardboard/foam/fabric after that wetting down that you gave it. At which time, you'd have lost a bit of labor, but no $$$$.

IMO Try a good cleaning with simple green, or a similar cleaner, might even try one of those little steam cleaners....

 

I know there is a spray contact glue you use that makes life pretty easy. It's very easy if you flip your truck first.

 

The instructions are great and I will have to use them. I have no problem tearing into an engine, nor rebuilding an automatic trans. Anything mechanical is ok for me but this headliner intimidates the heck out of me.

 

Have you guys ever seen those cool foam graphics that they put on headliners and doorpanels? They make a foam cut out of like flames, or maybe a ram head, and glue it to the original headliner. Then they use something like 3M spray adhesive and take a fabric and stretch it over. Then you have the shape of the ram's head showing up underneat. If you do it right, it looks SWEEEEEEET! I have been thinking about it a lot.

Hey, even if you don't do the foam thing, couldn't you use some more fabric and spray glue it on the headliner?

 

I was just sittin here thinking of a carpet cleaning company like ChemDry. I dont know if they use water in their cleaning process. They might have a product that would work or they might be able to clean the headliner outright. If Virginia has a ChemDry outfit.

 

The headliner material I used for my Mother's 86 4-door Aries was purchased at PepBoys for about $30. I bought the SUV sized package 'cuz I want to be sure to have enough the 1st time.
I only had a small piece left over.
The material is cloth, with the foam already attatched.
I used a wire brush to remove the old foam from the cardboard headliner backing, worked really well.
