Question Headlights turn off when switching high to low

I just started having a problem with my headlights. About once or twice out of every 20 or so times, when I switch from high beam to low beam the headlights turn off entirely. It only happends when switching high to low, never low to high. I suppose it's probably the hi/lo selector switch? Anybody run across this problem?

My 97 did this when I would lower the steering wheel down the lights would go off only on low beams not high. I took the cover off where the key goes in and the top wire slid out when tilting the wheel down shutting the low beams off. I pushed it back in it has worked ever since. I think it is blue and white.

You should be able to access the wiring from column near bottom of column but my guess is switch is starting to go bad. I can try to look in my chilton manual for wiring and switch info. It's possible that you can clean switch with contact cleaner and lube with wd-40 (designed for electrical items) and that will fix it for time being.

I'll try a new switch if it's that easy to get to.

The multifunction switch is more like $90, bought one just a couple months ago.
This is common problem caused by the open design of the switch that allows gunk to build up on the contacts.
I've found that spraying aerosol electronic cleaner at the base of the switch while flipping it back and forth will most always cure the problem for several years.

I haven't looked at the switch yet, is it possible to clean it without removing it?

Wait till you try to remove that puppy. Yep, $89

They used these stupid hollow point torx screws and they don't give you much extra wire to play with on the plug end. I repaced my tamper proof screws with regular common american philips heads going back in.

I think mine is in the light switch. I can wiggle it and they will come back on. Local Dodge steeler said they sell the swicth and plug together for 93.00 . Does this seam right? I gave him my vin and asked about the recall on it and he said my truck must be to old or something, the only thing it showed was what kind of truck it was ????

I was talking about the light switch itself on the dash, not the one on the column.
