hard start

It's been rough starting all winter , its has been very cold 0F , but previous years it never had a problem. So today after work it was the worst. Did not think I would get it started. I'm now thinking maybe the grid heater? How can I trouble shoot this?

Batterys are die hard platiums , prob 4 years old but I think their still pretty good. I did smell an electrical burn at the start of winter and since my intermittent wipers don't work correctly and they don't go into park position without messing with them. Don't know if this could be anything related? A relay?

After you get it started, does the voltmeter drop as the grids operate post start?

If not, there's your answer.

It's at about 12v then jumps to 14v when started , but stalls out and I can't get it going now. Id guess relays good , bad grid heater or their would be no fluxuation at all?

no talk of codes. do the key cycle trick and pull codes. if the grid has a relay out or both you will have a code for sure. also less scientific but cycle the grid heater and pop the hood and feel the grid heater on the air horn. it should be warm.
I have had 2 issues with mine before. first time smelled and saw smoke. the Grid heater relay in fuse line burned/melted. 2 years later I lost a relay. I was able to still use my grid heater and it cycled but took longer to warm up. still had flucuation like normal on the Volt's

so you could have a relay out but still working. you would have a code tho.
do you know how to do the ignition key cycle trick to pull trouble codes

do you have the ability to plug in the truck at work or at home. this will help too

No, after it is running for the first few min, does it drag the voltage down off and on?

Are you saying it won't start at all now?

If you 'think' your batteries are ok, you are wasting time until you get them tested...

Burning smell could be bad connections, worn contacts, tired cables, Grounds...these are all free and fast checks.
