going to look at a 2002 2500 diesel tomorrow

Hi everyone,

I am going to look at a 2002 2500, reg cab, 4X4, auto trans tomorrow. It has 49K on it. Is there anything I should check? I have read on this forum about the lift and injector pumps going out. Did Dodge ever remedy this / recall or anything? Is there some modification of the fuel delivery system I should ask about? The truck is at a dealer. The saleman said the warranty on the engine goes to 100K. Is this true? If so does that warranty cover the injector pump. I just want to make sure because it is a strong selling point to me and a saleman might say anything to make a sale.

I hope to be a Dodge diesel owner tomorrow. I am just trying to stay calm and objective.

I have read, maybe on this site, that Carfax checks are a waste of time. Does anyone have an opinion on them?

Thanks,
burnan

Yes, engine (including lift and injection pumps) is warrantied to 100K, unless the truck has been flagged for using a warranty voiding aftermarket fueling box or similiar.
5 years for early 2002's, 7 years for later 2002's
You can have the Dealership run the vin number, this will tell you what all came on the truck from the factory, what recalls affect the truck and which have been done already, and if the truck has been warranty flagged, and will have the inservice date to let you know if it has the 5 or 7 year powertrain.

Yes, IMHO, carfax is a waste, it only shows reported accidents and owners.
You could try to have the Dealer run a free one for you, as part of the deal, just in case it shows anything.

Hey burnan,
Welcome aboard. Make sure you get anything about the warranty (be it engine or drivetrain) in writing. The 2002's were sold with different warranties depending on when during the model year they were sold. I believe if you bought it later in the year (bought mine in June of 2002), you got a longer warranty.
You have the main culprit to reliabilty listed already, the fuel system. I second Phox's suggestion to make sure the truck isn't flagged as a mod'ed truck, thus voiding the warranty.

Edit: Looks like Phox has the warranty stuff in his post already, didn't catch that the first time I read it (I'm not done with the Hooked on Phonics series yet)

Good luck,
We'll know if you got it, we'll see the smile from here.
