Red face Getting new tires monday, stock rims. Sizes?

I did some searching and some say you can go up to 285/75/16 on the stock rim.. However from what ive read the stock rim is 6" wide, yet all the tire manufactures want at least a 7" rim for the 285 series tires.

Truck currently has 235/80 if i remember correctly.. Id like to get an extra inch or two clearance with some 285's..

The tire shop im going to says the Bridgestone Dueler III should fit, its a 285/75/16, rating D, 10 ply. Would that be a good choice? I think total would be $640 on them (tires, hazard, fees, install/balance, etc), plus tax.

Not too much offroading, when i get around to pulling itll probably be 6-7,000 lbs max. (trailer + car)

Trying to keep the cost of all four tires installed, w/ tax, under $750.

The standard steel wheel is 16"x6.5", and the maximum tire width you should run on such a wheel is 255.

This limits you to a 255/85R16 tire.

Would there be any problem stepping up to 17's off the newer dodge trucks?

These are on ebay locally.. Dont look to have much offroad capability though.. And they arent much taller over a 245/75/16..

265/70/17

D is actually eight plies..

sorry to correct u i meant no harm... I have seen 285s on what im assuming are the aluminum rims, and they fit no problem they are actually about the same height if not about an inch taller than the 235/85/16 u probly have on right now. Many people have said if you want a taller tire go with a 295 goodrich, its taller than a 305 and not as wide, kinda like the 285 width just a little taller.. I dont have any experience with those. But my stock rims on my 1996 have bridgestone dueler MTs mounted on for deer season, but in South tx it hardly rains, and when it does, we have mostly sand in our lease..

Tx

If you look at the sticker on the drivers side door post it should tell you what width the rims are if they are still stock. I think you should follow the tire manufacturers guidelines on rim width for their tires as you can lose the sidewall integrity with a too wide tire. As heavy as our trucks are and the weight you will be putting on them I would be afraid of causing a failure. My $0.02.

Usually if you have the alloy rims, they come with 265 stock, a 285 is not a drastic leap up.. So it shouldnt be an issue to have them, but as usual they would need to be maintained and checked..

fschiola, your 265's.. are those on the stock rims?

P.O.R., the 285's you have are on stock rims as well?

I just washed the truck to take some pictures, so you can see which rims the truck has.. Going to do some before and after shots with the old tires vs new tires, as well as measuring clearance with old and new.. so.. ill do that once it dries up a lil more

These rims run 265 stock on them, this truck probly has 305's on it, so again i say 285s aint a problem.. i have friends that run them on these rims no problem..

I'll chime in as well...I run 285s on stock chrome rims with no problems.

I also have to agree with Tx...A D rated tire is only 8 plies. I'd check twice with your dealer. To me the rating of the tire is more important, especially when towing, than a slight deviation in size.

The wheels on my 2000 are the stock 16 X 8" aluminum wheels that have the 265's
The 1997 has stock 16 X 6.5 chrome wheels and came with 245's. Hope this helps.
