fuel sending unit

this week i noticed that my fuel gauge do not work. i figured that out when i ran out of fuel while warming up my truck. my PSD Ferd buddy had quite the chuckel out of that. But my question is how hard is it to replace the sending unit without pulling the bed off? and where can i get a new one without going to the dealer?

Thanks in advance

Ian

The easiest way to replace the sending unit is to lift the bed on the drivers side. Otherwise you have to drop the tank. If it is empty it won't be too bad unless you live in a salt belt and everything is petrified with rust. and I would recommend you don't use a torch there.
The sending units are mainly a dealer item or a bone yard item. They are quite expensive. I've seen a few problems with the wire terms working loose inside the tank and the assembly ratteling loose inside the tank. You might want to take it apart first to see exactly what is wrong before you order up parts. It might be something you can repair instead of replacing.

My truck has a fifth wheel plate bolted thru the frame and a tool boxes etc. I used a motorcycle lift and a 2x8 and two straps and walla it went smooth. I have heard the tilt is easy also, with the extras in my bed it was easier to do the drop. Dealer on the sending unit, Goodluck,,Rick

The sending units are only about $40 but many dealers will tell you that you have to buy the entire $300 module, that isn't true.
Stand your ground with them

You dont by chance have the part number for that sending unit?

My dealer wont budge on selling the unit seperate from the $300 module, and I would like to fix it, but for 300 bucks i will continue to use my trip counter..

Thanks

I just don't understand how you know everything Is there anything you don't know. Have you ever thought about going on JEOPARDY and turn all this knowledge into money?
