fuel gage problem

yesterday i drove the truck a few miles i noticed it had a 1/4 tank in it then last night i jumped in it took off to notice my low fuel light was on looked at the gage it was reading empty and checked overhead it read 0 (i no the overhead reads off the gage) i was a little upset to say the least but i new the truck had a 1/4 tank in it so i kept on going after about 10 miles the gage slowly came back up then later last night it worked perfect and today it was fine any ideas what would cause it to read empty like that

I had to have the sending unit replaced on my 01' at 60k miles. It would show all over the place.

I've heard some folks report that using Marvel Mystery Oil as a fuel additive, or some BioDiesel fuels can make the gauge read incorrectly.
