Fixing rust
Fixing rust
Hey guys,
I want to fix the rusting areas on my truck before its too late, which some may already be ( PICS IN MY GALLERY). Common "bottom of door" rust, driver side wheel well upper portion, and driver side, lower, front, cab corner
. The rust is well under the paint in all areas, the cab and door rust is deep. I dont have the money to take it to a body shop, so i have to fix it my self before it starts making holes. I dont care how i have to do it or how bad it looks. Color matched spray paint and clear would suit me fine. I just want to know how to prepare it and stop the rust the right way. Yes, most can just be replaced, except for the cab corner. Its part of the cab itself so i dont think i wanna mess with replacing that
.
I was thinking the process would be grinding all rust down to bare metal, replace metal if possible
and bondo were needed, then paint? Any rust prevention that i can do? Im thinking the doors are gonna be hard to do. I can already tell you that i cant section any thing out cause i dont have a mig, only a stick that loves to burn thin metal.
I dont care how i have to do it, just as long as it holds and looks better than rust. I may not mind rivits
Any input is greatly appreciated -Jake

If the door rust is not actually visible, unless you look under the door, you might get away with just stopping it. I do this by squirting motor oil, or thicker, into the door cavity. If you don't have the door panel off just squirt it up into the drain holes.

Like said above they make rust converters. I bought some at walmart and am trying it right now as we speak. The directions are knock any loose or scally rust off and clean as good as possible then apply a thin coat. The stuff chemically converts the rust. After a 24 hour conversion time It is sandable and paintable. Right now I am trying a few spots that are hiddden such as under the bedliner and under the battery box. Like you I just want to stop the rust for now and touch up with color matched paint for a couple more years. My truck is just starting to show its age and a total body shop job is a few years off. May be a good thing for you to look into also. Another product that does the same thing is POR 15. With a search I am sure that you can find out alot of good info. That stuff is pricey though.
the rust converter is good, get it on the back side and in side of door good. cutting it out and new metal is the only way that a pro would do it. If you need a cheap fix, use what they call tiger hair filler ( bondo). when using filler you want it as thin as posable, BUT in this case you need it around 1/4 " thick or so. be sure to kill all rust first ,sand and top coat with color of choice , and it will stay for awhile good luck
