Dome lights stuck on
Dome lights stuck on
I have obtained a 2001 CTD HO 6 speed truck
. The dome lights all the time unless if I turn them off using the dome light switch :-[. I removed the delay relay in the fuse box to test the dome circuit but the dome lights stayed on. I'm thinking now the problem is in the door switches. I'm using a Haynes repair manual and the schematics do not show the door switches. I would like to know the color of the wire used on the door switches. Even better is getting an idea on how to remove the door dome light switches. Any connectors available where I can test the door switches?
Well I know this will be a difficult question to answer. Any comments will be appreicated.
Regards,
Ken

Re:Dome lights stuck on
The following info is from a 2002, but yours should be about the same.... All wire sizes unless noted are #18.
The only switchs I can find that deal with the doors being opened is the 'door ajar' switches. The passenger door switch has a Black w/light green stripe ground wire going to it, and either a White wire [base pickup dress package] or a Black w/light blue stripe wire leaving it. These wires should be grounded when the door is OPEN. The drivers door switch is a little more complicated. There are two switches that work in tandem on the drivers side. There still is a Black/light green ground wire going to both switches. One switch has a Tan wire that is grounded when the door is opened, and the other has a White.
The most common problem with dome lamps staying on, is that one of the door switches is not depressed enough when the door is closed. You should be able to check this by opening the door and manually pressing in on each switch, one at a time. Remember, it may have to 'time' out.
To remove the door ajar switches the book 1st says to remove your negative battery cables [ It's a small pain, but not as much as buying new air bags or whatever ]. Then grasp the body of the door ajar switches with a pair of pliers, rock gently back and forth while trying to pull the switch out. There is no mention of adjustment. So you might have to get a little creative if it is just a clearance problem. Good luck, and let us know what you find. We might have the same problem some day.

Re:Dome lights stuck on
Thanks JKlender! The passenger switch sticks out much further that of the driver door switch. I taped a packing peanut on top of the driver door switch and tested the dome lights. That fixed the problem! So it is just a switch gone bad on the driver door. I hope I can just pull the switch out and replace it. Thanks for the suggestions!

Re:Dome lights stuck on
just replaced the passenger door switch on my 01 ho 6spd, the light was comming on while driving or during the middle of the night, pushing the plunger in and out a few times would fix it but it would always come back on. I used a small screwdriver to gently pry the plunger out of the door post, then pull it right out and unplug it, plug in your new one and press it into the hole. the new one will come extended out as far as it will go and i spent a while trying to figure out how to adjust it down to where the drivers side was, there is no way to adjust it, after it is installed shut the door gently against it and it will adjust itself down to the proper distance, doesn't sound good while it is doing this
but it does work. Bought the plunger at the dealership and was surprised at the price $10.00 canadian, should be a lot cheaper for you. hope this helps
