Dome Light Problem

Now that I have fixed all the major mechanical wear and tear parts its time to start fixing the small things like the dome light.

This is a very weird problem. If I put a bulb in the dome then the light comes on. When I shut the door the dome light stays on. No matter what I do, the dome light is always on unless I adjust the dial all the way down (dial right next to the headlight switch). Now Im not a moron I know that if its all the way up then its suppose to come on. The problem is that with the switch all they way down, It turns my dash lights all the way off. So I can either ride around with my dome light on at night and have no dash lights or I can have dash lights and have no dome light (cause I took the bulb out).

Any ideas on what might fix this weird problem?

The door sw provides a ground for the lite. The door sw's often get corroded and stick/short to ground, thus putting on the lite. You can take it out and clean and lube it up and should work for awhile. It's either that or the wire from the lite to one of the doors is shorted.

The dash dimmer switch is driving the dome light and I believe that is wrong. Somehow, either thru wiring problems or headlight switch problems, you have the interior light circuit crossed with the dash lights.

Does your dome light come on if the dash/running lights are off?

No the dome goes off when I turn the adjustment on the dash lights all the way down

1. With the dimmer adjustment all the way down the dome light goes off (and also the dash/radio lights are off)

2. With the dimmer just barely up (almost at the bottom) the dash lights are very dim and the dome light is on

3. With the dimmer almost all the way up (right before the click) the dome light is on and the dash lights are bright.

4. With the dimmer all the way up, the bed light is on as well as the dome light and the dash lights are bright

The dimmer should have 2 clicks, the first for the dome lite the second for the bed lite. Sounds like the dimmer has problems. You should try some contact cleaner and move the dimmer wheel.

I am having the same problem as above and am going to try the fix. I was also told to check the #12 fuse (which is in the black no tamper shield ). The fuse wasn't the problem for me so hopefully this works.
