difference between 94-97 and 98-02 Gaugeworks gauge pods?

On my 1997, the stock plastic pillar trim piece attached with a few screws to the steel pillar. I then fastened my Gaugeworks pod to the stock plastic pillar trim.

On my 2002, it appears the stock plastic pillar trim is held in place with the door seal rubber. I'm wondering if the 98-02 Gaugeworks gauge pod replaces the existing pillar trim.

The pillar trim on the '98-'02 are held by clips no the back, they just snap off, the door seal rubber just happens to overlap it. The pods still attach to the factory pillar trim.
