Im ready to sell my truck because of this stupid DW. Trac bar has been replaced. The only play I can find in the steering is sector shaft play. It seem most common on gradual left turns going about 50 to 55 mph. It hit me twice today and it was about a 7 outta 10 on the DW scale. So has anyone had DW caused by sector shaft play? Comments?

 

well I was wondering about your tires. Or your wheel bearings.

 

hows the ball joints?

 

Id have an alignment done and change your camber. do a search for 'optimum' and look for the magic alignment numbers. Camber will help with the DW, as well as that trackbar and the DSS.

 

Try dropping your tire pressure some. A while back I aired my tires on my grand cherokee and next time I drove it there was the wobble I thought about it and could not figure out what could have changed. Then I remembered airing the tires so I dropped them down 5 psi and wobble gone. Tried this on a freind dodge and it worked on it also he had just put on new tires and it started. You will need to experiment with it a little but it works.

In order of importance...

First thing to do is go get your tires ballanced by a reputable shop, second would be to make sure you have no play in your track bar, and third would be to make sure you have at least 4 degrees of caster..

If it still happens with those three things good you'd want to start looking at ball joints.. Sectr shaft play would be one of the last causes..

I have 287,000 miles on all the stock front end parts and it was about time to change them all. I had death wobble coming from everywhere. But the real culprit came from the upper ball joint passenger side. I replaced the steering shaft(Borgeson), tie rods(both) drag link, sway bar links, energy suspension control arm bushings,ball joints, and a 50.00 alignment. Death wobble comes from something loose. If you still have it your missing something. The front end on a "95" is very simple I replaced everthing with Moog(life time gaurantee). They may not be the best but I've had 4 track bars for the price of one, the minute its loose I switch it no cost. I get excellent discounts from the local shop(55%) off retail. I've been a faithful customer for 20 years. I still run 245-16 stock tires. Today I cruised home at 80 mph with a truck that actually had neutral steering. If your truck is stock and an older one its not that hard to find. You just have to be careful in checking all the components.

 

I see this all the dang time. If you search it you get enough reading material for a month on how to fix it. Can anyone just tell what DW is? I have never experienced it.

 

Death wobble needs a sticky, btw don, I got your bar and have not had time to install it yet, will do soon, good to see you on the board.......... lots of reading material but without a concise sticky it can be tough filtering out the responses that just make no sense........

Death wobble seems to be a chassis / steering problem that shows up when something is worn and you hit a couple bumps at higher speeds. The impacts kick off a nasty oscillation where the front wheels hop around and steer right and left. The effect is additive, it just gets worse until you slow down or stop completely.
Its definitely a mfr design problem that really should be addressed in a recall or at the very least a TSB.

 

Ive experianced this on my lifted 1500. I replaced all the worn parts and then installed a Rancho double stabilizer on the steering. Tire size has a lot to do with it. I run 285's and a wheel with a lot of offset. We shoot ourselves in the foot quite often when we reengineer things.Tire balance and alignment are a couple important factors.

 

They wouldn't align it they said there was too much play in the front end. Next step is a DT Trac Bar kit and replace tie rods/tie rod ends. Too much fun!

 

get the ball joints too.
dont mess around, fix it.

4 ball joints.
tie rods and ends.
both front wheel hubs.
track bar.
alignment.

that will fix it for sure. as long as you take it to very good shop to get it aligned.
