I have a 97 w/almost 250k on it. The cruise control is bad about creeping up 10-15 mph over wherever I set it. It eventually settles down to set speed, but in winter it can take 20 minutes. Now that it's summer, it doesn't take but about 5 minutes. Anyone else have this problem?

 

my 99 does it.

This happened on my '99 as well, very annoying. Mine would actually accelerate fairly brisk after you hit the set button.

Sorry but I never found a solution, I'd just hit set well under where I wanted the speed to be and then use the accelerate or coast button to fine tune.

 

Thats pretty much what mine does.

Frequently when you press the set button it will accelerate very fast. I just tap the brake and try again, sometimes it takes a number of tries but it will finally work. Seems like holding a very steady speed before setting helps but not always. Once I finally get it set correctly it holds the speed very steady.

 

Factory Chrysler cruise control used to be made by ARA. To my mind it used to be the best on the market and we installed it on everything aftermarket. My truck doesn't have cruise but if yours in question has a vacuum operated servo with a cable going to the throttle quadrant then it's the same. What causes the cruise to creep up is the gap at the end of the cable at the quadrant. The gap should be no more than 1/8 inch. If that doesn't fix it then it's the servo itself but it was usually the mis-rigging of the cable.

 

Been there, done that. My 99 did it, worse when cold, and sometimes when you'd hit a bump it would decide it needed to put the hammer down. With as much fuel as I'm running through the 99 it caused quite a jump in speed, and a pretty respectable black cloud, every time it did it.

On to the solution. Replace the cruise control servo under the left battery box. You'll be amazed.
Also, check your vacuum line while in there as it tends to get eaten up by battery acid and this would be a good time to replace it.
