Mine just started cracking this weekend. It's got about a four inch crack starting at the middle defrost vent and going straight back, I assume that it will only get bigger.

I replaced an upper dash shell last week in an 01. Chrysler bought the part, customer paid labor. It looks nice, but I still had to do alot of plastic welding and epoxy work as parts of the plastic shell the dash attaches to were cracked/broken also. Black facia around gauges/radio was also broken......that part has been "stuporceded" and is nearly $400 dollars now. I found one on ebay and the customer went that route.

Ok I posted in this thread before that I was going to take the dash cover off and try to lay some real thin layers of fiberglass on the underside. That would be real labor intensive and expensive. So I got to looking on LMC Trucks website and low and behold they have replacement dash covers for our trucks. 139.00 plus shipping. So I ordered one not because the fiberglassing method would be too expensive, but because of the time it would take. It takes long enough to just change one. And I have way too much going on right now to waste time doing something that might or might not work. When I get it on I will post some picts. But don't hold your breath waiting on it as I am real busy. If they would just make days about 36 hrs. long I'd be in great shape. Bill

Wow, all these years and I never knew anything about this! Mine isnt cracked fortunatly.

I want to know more about the one you get from LMC, from what I saw its JUST a cover and NOT a replacement. I want to get a black replacement for mine. I have seen a few tan interiors with the black dash top and love it!

These guys take safety problems very seriously, just a few justified complaints is all it takes to force a recall.
It would have to be something like the dash flying off into your face or something similar.
My 250K mile '98 was fine until I went to install some gauges on the dash... I accidentally poked a finger through a defroster vent, and the dash top crumbles like a gingerbread house (but it don't taste near as good).

Also, I tried the NHSTA route, but didn't hear back yet... I told 'em how dangerous it is to take yer eyes off the road to fish a beverage outta the dash's beer-holes!

I guess I'm lucky, I don't have a cracked one on either of my '95's
(2WD 3500 CTD w/232k & 95 1500 4x4 w/141k).
My mom's '98 has just started to crack in 1 small spot in the last month. It has 187k (bought new).
As a matter of fact I just removed a nice dash pad from a '97 & have a line on another decent looking one from a '95.
The removal however....

2001.5 In at 140K.

Just noticed 2 smallish (6") cracks headed for an intersection. I drilled some holes at the top of the crack and they appear to have stopped. keeping an eye out for new ones.

I'm surprised your drill did not go through the dash while you were drilling.
