Charging System Too Low -error message
Charging System Too Low -error message
When first started in hot or cold weather my voltage gauge is showing my truck's charging system is not charging. After a little running down the highway (maybe ten minutes) it kicks in to 14 + amps. I have confirm this with starting the truck and looking at a Battery tester. I have taken my alternator off replace it with a new one and had the old one tested, which tested fine. I thinking maybe it's the PCM, I hope not, if so my truck will be down for two weeks and the Dealer will be $400 richer. Is there anything I'm missing that can be check. I did check the grounds and wires and everything looks OK.
Thanks
Peter

That is a volt meter, not an amp meter. It is normal in cold weather to see low voltage as the grid heaters are cycling. That recovery to the 14 volt area in a few minutes indicates the alternator Is working fine.
Even if it is a PCM, you don't have to replace it, use an older style Chrysler voltage regulator. If it happens to be it, do a search on here, Infidel has a picture of the hookup in his photo gallery.
I would bet it is the grid heaters though.

Sorry, I meant Voltage. I don't think it's normal, as it threw a error code P1682. I looked at the service manual and it details what to do. I'll have to just run it down with a multi meter. Thanks for the advice. If it is the pcm does anyone know how in infidels photo to find the ignition source and the other go to the field terminals?
