A/C Recharge Question

It's starting to get really hot down here so I turned on my a/c and it blew out "cool" air. This time of year, "cool" air isn't cutting it so I think I need to recharge the system. I have never touched the system so I am not sure of the details. In my Haynes manual, it gives me all of the steps, and the warning not to hook up to the "high side". The only thing is they never identify the high and low sides. I know I need to hook up to the low side, so is it the one that comes out and down towards you or is it the one that goes up and into the firewall? Just want to make sure before I kill myself performing such a simple procedure. Thanks in advance for the help.

You can not hook up to the high side unless you have a high side fitting. Most recharge kits only allow you to hook into the low side.

Does your system have R12?
When did they phase in the R134a?
If so you will need to buy one of the retro fitting kits. Or go have it professionally done.

on the 95 model the low side port is just to the left of the radiator cap covered by a black cap (at least on mine)

As someone else stated is it 12 or 134??
They don't want you hooking to the high side, for saftey... If you have gauges, don't open the high side valve with the truck running.. This will let the high side pressure go to the can or charging tank.. and possibly bust the can/tank.. ( pushing 200+ psi into the can/tank.)

With my recovery machines I charge on the high side.. but never with the machine running.. I only use the low side if I can not get all of the charge in on the high side... You can charge on the low side..

I would not use the Leak sealers.. but I recommend the Dyes... (but you have to use a light to find the leaks..)
Charge by weight if you can... you'll be much happier...
Good Luck,
Bryan

Thanks guys for all of the help. I found it next to the radiator cap where sjester said. One step closer to cold a/c.
