A/C Problems

My 01 is not properly cooling. I have the right charge on gas but compressor will randomly shut off. I can turn the controler off for a few miles and turn it back on and it will continue cooling. Sometimes it takes a little longer.

If you are sure it's charged correctly it may be freezing the evaporator core. This can happen if the condensate drain becomes plugged and the plenum fills with water. If you look at the plenum under the dash you will actually see a condensation line on the outside of the plenum when it's cold.

Funny...mine is doing the samething. The system hasn't been touched in 5+ years and it wasn't quite as cool. I added 1 can of freon and cleaned the blower wheel as it was full of leaves. Air flow was improved, it was plenty cold and it was draining good. What would cause it to work ok one second and then go to hot right away. It's almost as if you turn the heater on right away, very quick change. Turn it off, wait 15 seconds, turn it on and most of the time it blows cold again. I'm thinking it may have developed a leak but it wouldn't blow cold right? Any ideas?

The water in the floorboard is due to the a/c condensate drain water blowing back. Install a 2" long piece of hose over the existing factory drain which will allow it to drain down and not blow or run back into the cab.

You most likely have a broken blend door, not the door itself though. The blend door actuator is by the hump on the passenger side and strips the plastic. "Heater Treater" sells a part to fix it, it's just like an adapter.

Yes I guess that's it....When cooling I can hear a flop like one of the blend doors then it goes hot right away. Is there a procedure/process for the heater treater? Thanks!

Cleanest procedure for the HeaterTreaters is to remove dash and HVAC plenum from truck and repair that way. Fastest way (supposedly) is to follow HT's instructions on cutting into your plenum box and R&R the doors with everything still intact in the truck. I opted to remove my dash...all in all the repair took me about 9hrs....taking my time of course.

My question and fix is for a 2nd gen....after reading, it seems the heater treater is for 3rd gen. Is this true? thanks.

There is Also one for the second gen and it's a simple fix. Here is a link to the 95 -02 page. http://www.heatertreater.net/magento...ram-95-02.html

The gear/heater treater part is either metal from the factory on my truck or it's been replaced.

Perhaps it has already been replaced as they were not metal originally. The only thing that controls the temperature is that little blend door motor. I would take it off (it's only 3 screws) and inspect what you have going on.

I checked it while apart...all seems ok. I drove it yesterday...a/c worked fine for 20min and then all of a sudden again instant heat out of the vents. I'm going to ck the vac lines on and around the motor again. Any other ideas are appreciated.

Every mode door in the AC system is vacuum actuated except the Blend door which is electric. If the adapter and motor shaft is not damaged then it must be the motor itself. If you are running on "MAX" when it goes to hot does the fan noise change? If so the recirc door is loosing vacuum and the temp would rise but not be "hot" but if it was a total loss of vacuum then it would go to defrost which is the default mode with no vacuum.
