I've done a dump truck load of compressors at the caddy dealer, replaced compressor and orifice. Added oil and dye(for future leaks) for compressor, pull vacuum, recharge. I'd say out of 100 plus compressors I maybe changed the dryer 2-3 times. Massive compressor failures, orifice plugged so tight with metal you' wonder if it would ever come out. Other than that, small metal failures, compressor and orifice and roll on. Never had a come back, nor did the other two a/c guys in shop. We would install a filter before the orifice though on the severe metal failures though.

I believe if you buy a compressor from one of the supply houses they usually specify that you "must replace the dryer" for your warranty. Kinda weird since it is on the suction side after the orifice.....which means metal won't get there anyhow..... Seems to be a way to sell more parts to those who don't know any better.
