Buy new or fix my baby?

Well, it's time for a new transmission. That's $5K for a new Goerend on my truck that's worth $12K. That 5K could be 10 months of payments on a new dodge. I love my truck, but it's getting to be that time when everything is starting to break. What would you do?

fix it..

do you want all the new pollution controls? the DPF, CAT and EGR troubles?

are you thinking about using biodiesel? the 07 and on trucks. espically the ones with a DPF have problems with biodiesel. from what I understand this is due to how the DPF works..a very late injection of fuel to clean the filter..well it seems that biodiesel doesn't burn as well and get passed the rings in the crankcase oil..not so good..you need more frequent oil changes.

since I run biodiesel I'd vote to fix it.

Personally, I would go back to a 12Valve, but then I get accused of being a Luddite all the time.

Seriously, I would put the Goerend in, way too many issues with CR trucks much less the 07.5 and up garbage.

Put the money in your truck.

the 5K would pay a bunch of payments on a new truck but then what after that? a whole lot more money thats what... and eventually like most (not all) trucks something will break and then you have to put more money in that truck. less than a quarter of the cost of a new truck will make your "old" truck better than new! and if your like alot of people on here.... the new truck will be slower then the old one.... then the mod monkey jumps on ya! more money in the new truck..... KEEP IT!!!

I'm with you fellers. I plan on driving mine til the wheels fall off then buying some new wheels instead of a new truck. It's nice not having a truck payment to make every month.

Tough call to pay almost half of what truck is worth. I guess if it were me I would go drive a new or newer one and see how I liked it. BUT, I am like the other guys, would have to delete the EGR and DPF, then have no warranty.

A new truck is not an investment. They are expensive and they depreciate.

You don't have to spend $5K on the trans unless you just want to. But once you have a built auto, your truck will perform much better.

I am definately a vote to keep what you got, build it like you want it and drive it forever. By the time you make another 5? or more years of payments on the new one, you will have to make the same decision again then....about upgrades etc. Build yours to run a half-million or more miles and pocket the difference in cost or apply it toward more upgrades.

Fix it if you like the truck. If you don't like it, get something else that you pay cash for. You can't afford a new truck if you can't write a check. You don't want it bad enough if you can write a check and won't write it. You're driving a 12v by choice which is another argument for fixing it.

I vote fix it. I am one of those that will never get rid of my truck. I don't like payments, I had an 06 CR and sold it to buy my 00 Vp and paid it off. I will replace everything as it breaks, so it will eventually be new again and no payments.

That many miles, it's only going to nickel and dime you to death down the road. If you happen to get a new truck, leave all the emissions stuff on it, and leave the dealer to deal with it, AS YOU GOT A WARRANTY. But you can't run bio diesel in it.

Best thing to do is take out a few different vehicles on a test drive. Who knows, you might find something other than a Dodge you'll enjoy driving.

Wow! You guys are pretty much all together on this. I think I'll fix my favorite vehicle and just be buried in it. At least my 7 year old son loves it. I guess the chicks will dig it, too when he starts driving it.... In another 40 years! This truck is by far my favorite vehicle ever and I think I'm with you, the new stuff smells good but will just start breaking sooner or later, plus all the emissions crapola sucks. The only problem is, with a built tranny I'll definitely have to add some more power.... Now, what do I need to get on my Goerend? Stall speeds? TC lockup stuff? Billet input shaft? Another job? I don't really plan on adding a lot more HP but just want to romp on it in 5x5 whenever I pull up next to a Ford....
