Broken Ignition

I left my truck at home while I went on vacation. My daughter used the truck once while I was gone. Now the ignition switch is screwed up. The key goes in OK. The switch turns fine but has no resistance, like it is just hanging free inside. It used to have detents that stopped it in the various positions. Those are there no more. To start now the truck is difficult . I have to push the ignition switch inwards really hard while turning the key to the start position. Sometimes that doesn't even work.
Any suggestions or words of wisdom? I don't even know how to tear it apart. I think the tumbler is OK but the framework around it is probably broken, but that is just a guess.

I found an old thread where good ole Infidel posted how to replace the switch. Off to NAPA tomorrow.

It may not be the switch, I have seen several do that and in these cases it was the lock cylinder that broke. There is an eccentric on the end of the lock cylinder that meshes with the switch, and it can break, allowing the lock cylinder to turn without operating the switch. It's easy to remove the lock cylinder and have a look before you go and buy parts.

You were right, Torquefan. It was the lock cylinder. Thankfyully Napa took the switch back.
