brake problems 97 3500 4wd

We just replaced front brakes on my 4wd 3500. when we got finished the ABS light was on, and the brake light fuse was blown. Now I can't keep a fuse in the darn thing, the ABS light is still on BUT my brakes work great. Have never had this problem before, any ideas? The brake light fuse only blows when the brake is applied. ???

I am not sure if this will help but here my $.02.
I don't believe you have ABS. What you have RWAL. The Sensor for that is on the top of the rear differential. I had ABS Light and Brake light on and had to replace the sensor to fix the problem. If remember right no codes where set. I am not sure why you are blowing fuses other than there is a short somewhere.
Your brakes will function normally, I drove for several months with the lights on.
Maybe someone else will have a more definate answer.
Copenhagenjunkie.

If you have got 4 wheel ABS maybe you damaged a cable on the front wheel speed sensors. This would lead to a fuse blowing when turning the key.

HTH

AlpineRAM

You might also try bleeding the back brakes. I have seen where the "combination valve", AKA proportioning valve, slips to far when pumping up the front brakes, causing the brake light to come on. Since they are closely tied together, the brake light may be tripping something to cause the ABS light to come on. You could also try unplugging the coombination valve sencor, it;s the 2 wire plug on the small block with all the brake lines running into it. Teh large block is the ABS/RWAL valve body. I don't know what will happen if you were to unplug those.
Even if any of this fixes it, you may still have a short someplace and should get it looked at.

Chris

I just found out you can check trouble codes of the RWAL, which is independent of other systems, with a jumper wire. Let me know if you want to do that and want me to post more info.

Chris
