dont believe you can swap knuckles as the 97 has the balljoints mounted in the spindle and the 2000 and up have the ball joints mounted in the axel, I believe you would find it easier(cheaper) to bolt in the newer axel and add 3rd gen brakes

But the earlier axles are capable of a much BETTER mod. Ford knuckles.

You get manual hubs, eliminate the unit bearings, roughly same diameter, but much more friction surface, and tighter steering all in one shot.

Only works on the earlier axle. (pre '99?)

Hmm - sounds like something a total loser would say...

Couldn't resist!
Has to be the most self-effacing screen name ever...

Sorry, but in 2000 they changed the way the ball joints enter the axle and knuckles, so just swapping the knuckles is impossible, and mounting the dual-piston calipers on the earlier knuckles won't happen without some machining, if even then.
If you want dual piston calipers, your best bet is probably, besides the axle listed above, getting a mid-90s F350 axle to put in there. It's been done, by another member here, and in addition to the slide on rotors and dual-piston calipers, he also has lockout hubs.

Chris

Have you put the 2000+ axle in an earlier truck? The reason I am asking is that the 2000+ is wider and the bottom mounting brackets on the axles are different.

I'm not sure if its because I have rear disk on my 2001.5 but the brakes on this truck have been good since day one. My first brake job i had done was 3 years 100000k and they were still 40% pad left as I was headed for a big RV trip ( 32' fifth wheel ) I installer ebc slotted and dimpled rotors and green stuff pads. 6 years latter and 250000k I just did them again and all I can say these brakes are GREAT stopping power

I've read this thread a few times and I didn't see anyone really confirm that this was possible on a 2000 2WD for the front brakes. I'm in the middle of replacing control arm bushings and ball joints and need rotors and brakes and would love to make this upgrade if possible.

Yes, and it looks like nobody has actually swapped in the front axle on a 4X4 either.
