Auto transmission vs 5 speed?

I'm looking for a truck and found one with super low miles that looks like it hasn't ever even been hooked to a trailer and the bed has only a few scratches in it .

Only problem is it's an auto and the color is kinda not what I want, two tone like a candy cane , but I could remedy that for under $1000 probably.

So is this auto like a 47re or a 727?

How do you guys like them? I know in my new truck I much much preferred the auto over the 6 speed because it was much quicker but I was hoping to get a hand shaker for my work truck so I could avoid transmission rebuilds in the future (since I plan to add some power to it). But I also hear the 5th gear likes to fall off in the NV4500 so maybe the auto isn't as bad after all....

What do you guys think?

If you get the auto you'll have to change the torque converter and valvebody, given it's in good health. I just can't stand the stock TC. Other than that it's just personal choice. It would be the 47re.

727 and 47re are very similar. I actually think the only difference is the overdrive on the 47re. Both trans need improvements to hold power. NV4500 needs the 5th gear fixed and clutch upgrades. 47re needs valve body and torque converter. If it is a clean truck I wouldn't hesitate with the auto or 4500. I've owned three 47re's and never had a problem with them.

Ok so I think I can get a good single disk TC for like $600-700 and the valvebody was done in my 48re for $480 and included the fluid change etc.

So that is like $1200 right off the bat and I think that is very livable considering the clutch and 5th gear fix costs on an NV4500.

Is the 47RE adequate if you don't plan on modding at all? I actually don't have anything to tow yet either, but I'm starting to look at 24V trucks, 2000 - 2002 vintage with auto and 4X4, either 3/4 ton or 1 ton but with the single rear wheel.

47RE is a pretty good tranny imo. Hotrodders, monster truck guys, etc. use it in all sorts of stuff.

many people i know do nothing to there trucks but a fully built tranny, and aftermarket vp44 and they love them if you want to have a good reliable truck fix the weak link and do no more then that. the auto is by far the way to go if doing nothing more then daily driving and fun. the 5 speed is better if your hauling so you can choose gears at will. weigh your options and keep in mind what you plan on doing with your rig. its rumored that the 5 speeds get better fuel economy but i think thats false and depends on the drivers style. i will never give up my auto!!! once i had it built i love it but stock i hated it with a passion.

Yeah it's going to be used for picking up material so it will be hauling like around 3500lbs+ on a regular basis in the bed and zipping around town to job sites. Towing a trailer occasionally.

But plan to add some power to it.

If I like it well enough I might sell my 07.

Yeah and if you rebuild it you can go with the 48re internals that are stronger like what an newer 5.9 cummins would have.

Yeah I might hold out, heck I really want a clean 98 quad cab 5 speed 12v with under 80K miles on it but that might take a while.

I didn't know which auto these came with, glad it's the 47re opposed to the 727 incase i end up with an auto. If I'm sitting in Houston traffic all day a stick might be a pain.

oh im sorry i didnt know you lived in a busy area. yea get the auto for sure!!! that is the only way to tow when in areas with traffic. i live in the oakland area and there is traffic everywhere and because of that i decided on the auto. plus i wanted disc brakes in the rear so thats why i went with the later 2001

Yeah plus I'll be in lots of neighborhoods lost and talking on 2 cell phones and trying to watch the nav . The auto is sounding pretty nice at this point the more I think about it.

yea its even a safety feature if you think about it... with all the distractions with traffic shifting isnt what you want to be thinking about.

It's personal opinion. I have a version of each, but I like the absolute control that comes with the third pedal.
