Another trans cooler line question.
Another trans cooler line question.
I have a '96 2500 4wd. I've been noticing a little drip under the truck and it seems to be the fitting at the cooler. It's sprayed around a bit making it hard to pin point, but I "think" it's coming from there. Anyway, should that fitting be a little "loose"? It seems to have a clip on it that secures the line to the cooler, but it seems to have a bit too much play in it. Is that normal, and how big a PITA is it to replace? Thanks in advance.
The toughest part will be getting good advice. I bought a 1/2"flare x 3/8 pipe fitting for $5.30 at the hardware store and it's a NO_GO. I had found the current replacement line ...Dorman 624-982 (updated line with only 1 QD fittings) the other looks to be 18x1.5mm thread flare fitting and may be known as kumatsu type it has a 22mm nut. The line I got from dorman is definitely not a standard 1/2" flare fitting. I still don't know what it looks like going into the log intercooler under the EX manifold. There can be BSPP or metric or O-ring or ???
Your original QD fitting on both ends sounds like mine...retaining clip is plastic and if over heated may fall out. They are easy enough to pinch with you fingers oir use a release tool to get them to release unless they are heat damaged.
Dodge had a service bulletin on it. There is a service bulletin on it here on the site, but it does not give P/N's or much details.
If you are asking about the front air oil cooler then forget all this....

Here was my try....

Had my front cooler line replaced while on the road a couple of years ago, clip melted. From what I recall there is a "supersede" on the part number that gives you a line with a metal, rather than plastic, installation clip on the front connection. Installed that and no more problems.
I went to a Dodge dealer today to check on price and availability of the flexible lines between the cooler and the hard lines. He told me they were $117.00 each! Considering they have a hose clamp on one end, and a fitting on the other, I can't help but think I can make a suitable replacement for much less. Anyone else bought theirs from a dealer?
