Air Conditioning problems

My air quit working all of a sudden, the pump kicks on and off on and off.
I know there must be a leak but is there a common place were this leak is?
The truck has 104000 on it and I have never had any problems with the air before.Has anyone eles had this problem?
It is hard to tell because of the blow by cup gets oil all over the place so it is hard to locate the leak

Thanks

Re:Air Conditioning problems

I have had my entire system renewed. First it was the Compressor and all the other goodies for 700 bucks. Three months later the evaporator starting leaking. My AC guy put some florescent dye in the system and recharged it. Came back in two weeks at night. He put a black light on it. You should have seen the the dye coming out the P hole from the evaportor drain. He also found a bunch of leaks from his previous installation which he fixed. The Evaporator job was 700 bucks. Part was 130 the rest is labor. Have to pull the entire dash out of the truck to ge to it.

So for the money some florescent dye will show you more than you want to see.

Re:Air Conditioning problems

I'm with CoastalDav. It's usually the most expensive, labor-wise, part, the evaporator. My AC went a little low lately so when I charged it I put in dye so the next time it gets low I can tell where the problem is.

Re:Air Conditioning problems

One not so obvious place they can leak is the input shaft seal on the compressor. If you don't find a leak any where else look under the clutch. Not the usual place they can leak but it can happen.

If you have to take the clutch off pay real close attention to the wear surface. If they are scored or worn unevenly it may be better to replace them while you are in there. Mine lasted to 140K miles before breaking the flexible drive fingers - but then around here I run the AC about 9 months out of the year :

Re:Air Conditioning problems

I just wanted to throw in the thought that I too had my AC go away fairly quickly at 49000 miles and waited over the winter till next summer to spend the money to have a leak I know would be there. the compresser would come on and off and on and off with no cold air blowing in AC mode ??? ???

The mechanic filled up with new coolant and looked for leaks and looked for leaks. NO LEAKS :'( found, which was frustrating because how did it just suddenly go away, but now 2 months later after recharge it is still blowing as cold as ice ;D ;D

Just food for thought, might just need a recharge......
