ABS & BRAKE warning light

I know this isn't a diesel truck but...

I've got a 1996 Dodge 1500 Gasser (In signature - Mom's truck)

The ABS (Warning light) and BRAKE (Warning Light) both are lighting up at random times. During braking, coasting, etc. But if you stop it does go out. Brake fluid is full and good light color. Brakes seem to work normally. But I do think the RWAL is not functional (guessing???) Speedometer in working fine. (Assuming speed sensor is working)

Any ideas on what to start looking for here?

This one has got me stumpped!?

I had that happen to me the other day when my left front wheel threw a wheel weight - it hit the inner fender and then bounced out to who knows where - both those lights came on and stayed on. I immediately drove to the dealer thinking that the weight cut a wire or something and after they checked they said that there was no error codes but it did show a temp short in one of the censors but it was fine. I'd suggest you take it to the dealer and have them do a computer check on it - maybe a bad sensor...

I seems to throw the lights on when rolling the most... Accelerating or braking... Once stopped or up to cruising speed the lights go out.

I went thorugh my Chiltons book and the only thing a RWAL got in the brain box, dump valves, and the speed sensor on the rear axle. I'm starting to wonder... Lot less compared to my 2002 diesel. No front sensors like the 4 wheel anti-lock system.

Going to look it over today and try and find the problem...I'll let everyone know...

Check all your bulbs. I had the upper brake light on the back of the cab burn out and it caused the ABS light to light up on my 95.

Just a thought.

Funny! I went to check the bulbs and they were blown! Now lets see if it stops the lights from coming on (ABS / BRAKE) ???

Going to town to get bulbs...

It takes quite few on/off cycles of the key to reset the ABS light. I was told it might take 40 or 50 cycles to reset. It was 2 weeks before mine went out.

The ABS/BRAKE lights only come on while the truck is rolling. Once the truck stops then the light goes out. Or if you step on the brake while rolling you will get the two lights. But once again the lights will go out once the truck stops. This applies in foreward or reverse gears.

Brake fluid has been changed and bled out about 5K ago.

Brake shoes are still good...

No leaks found...

Brakes still function. No loss of brakes...

Speedometer seem to be acurate yet and functional....

Getting very stumped!!!

That is exactly how mine acted. All I had was the burnt out bulb on the cab brake light. It just took quite a few cycles to reset and now it works fine.

Now that I have driven it more it seems like a loose connection in the ABS system. I not sure where the connector is hidden at or what to exactly look for in the ABS system. It like hitting a bump in the road and the light comes on. Also not always will it light up when you hit the brakes.

Anyone out there give me a clue where some of the devices are and what to look for... It really sux to see that **** light blink and wink at you... There is a reason why it coming on and I haven't found it yet...

Is there a why to reset the controller for the ABS system? Or dump the error codes???

Ok... a update on this problem...

I've pulled the rear axle sensor and clean it...Didn't notice anything wrong here... I know the sensor still could be bad...

Here is the real kicker...
The E-Brake is a soft pedal. In other word it will return back up when you apply the E-brake. But if you take you foot and push against the spring a bit and release the pedal so hit thumps the stop... The ABS light will wink at you for a moment...

Also rough dirt road will make it wink at you...

My question is where is the connection for the ABS connector at?? I would like to find the loose connection(s)...???

Just a suggestion here;
Have you looked up around the master cylinder for a black ground wire attached to a bracket on the front of the master cylinder. I had some warning light trouble including my ABS light. Took me along time to track it down but turned out to be this ground wire was burned and would flash yellow warning lights occasionally and then later got to the point where NONE of the low wash, ABS, and 4WD lights functioned at ANY time.
One guy told me the Dodge trucks are notorious for doing this.

When i had my tahoe i had the same thing happen to me twice and each time it was a different thing but really cheap to fix, the first time was i needed my brakes to be bled, the second time was the ABS sensor on the inside of the wheel was dirty. Ask your mom if the braking on her truck has significantly worsened over the last month and if so its either she needs to change her brake fluid and have it bled or her pump where the brake fluid is added may have a leak or debris in the hoses blocking the fluid. hope that gives alil help

Brakes have been bleed and brake fluid complete replaced. (Still full and no leaks)

No the brake power is the same...

If slam the drive side door or play with the E-Brake pedal and let it bang on the return the ABS light comes on. So now I think is a loose wire...

I checked the ground under the hood being there are three of them... All clean and tight... tjohnson suggested...

I'm going to take the guage console out and look back there next... Stay tuned for more ABS Light drama...
