98 or 98.5??
My buddy is looking at a 98?? it has quad cab with 24 valve, but has the old 94-97 dash and the fender badges are the older style, they don't say 24 vavle Cummins on them. Is this right? or is this truck pieced together??

98's (both 12V and 24V's) can have either the quad can or club cab...but Ive honestly never seen a 98 with the old (97 and down - with the single cup holder on top of the dash and LONG shifter) interior. Im not saying they dont exist, but I havent seen it. Seems like Dodge may have kept building until they were completely out of parts.
Take the VIN and go to a dealer and have them run it - they should be able to give you a build sheet free of charge - that way youll know for sure

Any 98 12v or 24v should have the newer style dash.
If you get the vin, this can help in decoding most of it http://www.dodgeram.org/tech/specs/VIN_decode.htm

I'm sure the vin will say 98 but I think the truck may have been pieced together at one time. Maybe an older dash because of a wiring fire or who knows. It is quad cab with the older style dash and the door badges dont' say 24 valve.

Strange .........I doubt that the truck would have been built like that by anyone other than DC - IMO, it would be way too big a job to properly wire the 24v ECM/PCM into the non electronic dash of the pre 98 years without a noticable amount of hacking when it comes to the wiring...........does it have the 98 and later black plastic mirrors or the pre 98 chrome mirrors?...........The truck is definately a 98........I think they may have been using left over parts?!!?! ...........I would have expected to see that in a 98 but you would think they would have run out of old parts by 98.5!

I’ve heard about it and now even seen it. A buddy here in town has a 98 12 valve. On one side it has 24 valve badges and on the other 12 valve badges. While he is the second owner, the guy he bought it from swears it has not been wrecked or tampered with.

Something doesn't sound right there, if they swapped the motor in it should still be a 97. Only way would be if the dash was swapped which makes you wonder about the mileage. Does it have a overhead console? The 8th character in the VIN is the motor, D for 12V, 6 for 24V. If it doesn't match then of course the motor was swapped.
None the less I agree with Eskimo, sounds like the worst of everything other than QC.

what kind of title does it have is it clean or salvage that may answer all of your problems or it may have not been bad enough to get a salvage title it could be a rollover 97 with a QC and a 24v engine and the emblems off the old wrecked doors just a thought

He claims it has a good never wrecked title. If it was wrecked it was long time ago, no signs of any recent work. Something just doesn't add up. I think my buddy is going to pass on it.

I believe I'd pass. Too many red flags. But, I had a buddy that had a 98, it had the newer style exhaust on it(like the 98.5),,, but it was a 12 valve, so, go figure.
