Thumbs up 98 12 Valve 4x4 5 spd

Hey all, it's been awhile since I've posted, only because the 1st Gen has been running so well. I have been looking for 9812V 4x4 5spd cc for quite some time now and just took a sweet one out for a test drive today. It ran and rode great, only 198K, not a spec of rust but the box is scarred up and it did have a 5th wheel plate. New injection pump a few months ago, newer Yokohama tires, running boards. It's on a lot where it was purchased new priced at $19,900. They have not inspected it yet but the salesman said he had allowed about $1,000 for repairs, so if there are few, the trucks sale price would be lowered. What do you think about the price and what specific problems should I be looking for on this model?

Thanks for any response!

Craig

Im not exactly sure of what the conversion of 198km's is to miles(123K?) but just for a comparison, I bought my 98 12v 4x4 LB, fully loaded with not a scracth on it and 82k miles for 17,900$. That 1K he will give you for repairs may be needed but if you ask me he is asking abit to much for that truck, I think a fair value would be somewhere in the area of 16,500. Bring him a print out of the NADA,KBB, and Edmunds price lists and see what he says.

Kevellis32,

Your conversion to miles is about right, and the $ is in Canadian funds so it would convert close to the figure you suggested. Thanks for the input!

That price is a tad high.

There was a 97 CTD in town here similar to mine with only 125,000 Km on it, mint paint and interior. It was around the $20K mark. I would bang him down to the 17K mark for sure.

Check the Track bar joint, good for haggling, Also the Ball joints. The replaced Injector pump has me concerned as they are not usually a wear item..

Good luck on it, that is a rare beast in these parts.

Called the dealer today, the truck needs some work, track bar, tie rod ends, ( funny, not ball joints too ) front brakes, rear axle seals, ( probably rear brakes too ) e-brake cable and the front cover has an oil leak, ( I wonder, kdp? ) I will check that out better on the next visit. They will be doing the usual servicing as well.
The battery terminals had some major scarring, looked like it was used to boost gas well compressors? The previous owner used to service them. The box has a couple of 5th wheel plate mount holes from PO too...all hidden by a cheesy plastic box liner which I told him I wanted to see under and wanted a spray in anyways.

The salesman is certainly applying the pressure, no doubt a practised sales technique or maybe the truth, he said he has a list of guys interested in the truck but since I called first I have first crack at it but needs to know asap.

Craig.

no doubt there are a ton of problems....they are all like that. I was in the same situation this fall....found one a quadcab sb to boot....but it just had too many problems and too many things to fix. I even went so far as puttting 10% down. They wouldnt let me talk to the previous owner or take it for my inspection - told the lot to stuff it.

Would be worth your while to take it to Cummins for a compression or leakdown test. Im always leary of buying a work truck cause Ive worked in the oil patch and I know how the trucks are treated.

Good Luck.
