Last week I had a vibration while at low speeds, but the vibration went away if I braked. My truck is a '95, 2-WD. I jacked the front up on both sides and the driver's side axle nut was loose enough that I could make the tire wobble a little bit. So I tightened it up and went on my way, and the vibration stopped. Today it started vibrating again, just like it did before--braking stopped it. So I just got new wheel bearings & seals at NAPA. I figure 220,000 miles is enough for one set!

But how exactly do I determine how tight to get the axle nut?

 

I did it the easy way... I finally dug out my Shop Manual and looked it up!

Tighten the axle nut to 30 Ft. Lbs., and rotate the rotors to take up any slack then back it off and re-tighten finger tight."

Also, the original Made In U.S.A. Timken's looked real good, so I just re-packed them and put them back on. I'll be taking the Hencho in Mayheeco bearings back to NAPA... and those were their PREMIUM bearings!
