4:11 to 3:50 swap on a 4x4???

Sorry for my ignorance on this one guys..........

I just came across a low mile '97 4x4 that I am think I am going to snag.

There is only one "problem".

It has 4:11 gearing. I DON'T want 4:11 gearing!!!!

I have never owned a 4x4 before. What would be involved in changing out the gearing???

Do front and rear axels have identical ratios?.....meaning that both wound have t be changed???

The truck is NOT at bargain pricing, so I don't want to throw a ton more money at it ot make it "right".

So, what say all you 4x4 aficionados. Is a gear change "doable"?

Thanks!!!

Front and rear gears would have to changed. It takes some pretty good mechanical knowledge to set up gearsets. If you could get used parts, the cost would be decent. If you have to buy new, it can get spendy in a hurry.

Your best bet would be to find someone that has done it before and wants to swap his 3.54s for your 4.10s. Kind of a longshot though.

Yeah swapping gears is not cheap, especially buying all new parts and the labor to get them put in if you have someone do them for you.

I hate installing gears, I can do them but it takes me awhile getting them perfect. There are a lot of guys on here that are always wanting to trade up or down.....some guys want the 4.10's and some guys want the 3.54's.

I'd say you are looking at about $1,000 bucks if not more to swap the gears if you pay someone to install them.

Run 35" tires with the 4.10 gears.

If you are running big tires, get the 4.10's.

It might, but then you are looking at new U bolts, hardware, and alignment. I'm sure there is something else in there as well. I know I would rather keep my axle, because I know they haven't been abused.

I have 4.10s right now and i thought about going to 3.54, I live in Sioux city, Iowa, but i want to get some peoples thoughts on this, right now im running 285s tires. I am planning on hauling hay, but i am also planning on doing some custom hauling down the road..... want to get best fuel mileage, but not so i have to downshift a thousand times going up a hill. The trailer is a gooseneck dual tandum 30'..... So its going to be heavy. May just go with a gear vendor, 10 speed then. hehehe

I'm in NC and would consider swapping my 3.54 for the 4.10's. I have the Dana 60/70 combination with the anti-spin diff.

I had to replace my rear gear set awhile back it the best price I could find was 800 for the gear set and another 300 to install. When I called about junkyard stuff it was way higher. This was a Dana 70.... Why are you wanting to swap?

I intend to go with taller tires and want to maintain my present overall gear ratio.

i swapped from 4:10 to 3:54 a couple years ago. found a guy here that wanted to trade, rented a shop with side by side lifts for a 100 bucks and did her in a day. axel swap is the way to go, no worries about lining up the rear. the front we just used a paint marker on the alignment bolts, my truck still goes straight down the road and i havent had an alignment yet. also we didnt need any new parts. .02
