2nd gen crewcab conversion, anybody doing it?

I see a lot of the first gen guys doing it with the old crewcab trucks. I was thinking you could take an ext cab with the rear opening doors and split the cab and doors and lengthen it to crewcab dimensions. I think it would be the easiest way to have a 2nd gen crewcab. When I win the lottery I will start this project.

Has anyone already done it? I remember the truck that had been converted with fiberglass doors, any other 2nd gen crews out there?

So after two hours of finding some pics to photochop. Then getting registered on photoshop.com, I still can't figure out how to stretch a pic or cut and paste it to make it look like a stretched quad cab. I am aggrivated. Maybe tommorrow I can figure it out.

They did have a pic of a quad cab stretch but it's not there now. It was 4 full size doors and then the suicide door.

Easiest way would probably be to get one of the Ramburbans from Mexico and splice in the rear of a cab.

I was/am still thinking of the 2nd gen mega-cab. From what I've thought thru if your ok w/the suicide doors then cut the cab just in front of the back glass, in between the back door and end of cab. From this point you add in frame, fuel line, electrical, driveshaft, cab mods. As I said, "I think" this is probably the easiest point to stretch the cab so someone can actually sit in the back seat.

If you decide to get after this you had better remember to stiffen the roof. I can't believe how thin the sheetmetal is on mine. Every time I wash it, it collapses and makes that hollow wrinkling sound!

Unless somebody decides to drop off some frames and cabs I don't see this happening for me anytime soon. But I keep dreaming. With a rapidly growing family I sure wish my truck was a crew. This is a definite dream truck and if I do become able I will make an attempt.

high bid, thats not a bad idea. You could add a section of ext cab w/window behind a quad cab door. I wonder what kind of dimensions you would get with that.

I have thought of doing the same thing, if time and money will ever allow it....
There was a company that made a few way back when, Jstull on this site has a crew 2nd gen and I have a copy of diesel world that featured another crewcab 2nd gen (after the magazine went to print his truck got stolen)

In order not to make it too long, I was thinking of only adding 8" or so. This would really increase the leg room in the back seat similar to a 3rd gen megacab. I was thinking add in flat steel to the inside of the cab following the contour lines and bending to follow the form. My only issue and for lack of doing the project is finding a level garage my truck can fit into and a week or so off from work. I know it can be done and have it mentally mapped out in my head.

Thinking about this I would probably just add six inches to the portion of the cab behind the suicide doors, pushing the back wall of the cab back.

It might look funny though.

Exactly! Really not any different than a megacab looks today.

I don't know who owns it and I never got to talk to the guy before he left, but I saw just what your talking about in Gillette, Wyo at a truckstop. It was yellow and caught my attention from across the parking lot when he started it up (oooh, that sweet sound of a cummins). Had to have been a 98 or earlier from what I could tell.
They are out there but few and far between.
