2001 with salvage title, good deal??

I found an 01 2500 4x4 6speed Cummins with 81,000 miles for $14,000. The seller says it has a salvage title only because it was stolen & the steering column was cracked, but it wasn't wrecked. I don't want to buy a wrecked truck but if it only had a broken steering column due to theft, I'm considering it. Have you guys heard of this? Would that truck get a salvage title just because of a broken steering column? Thanks in advance for any ideas or help.

If the insurance company paid the owner for the theft claim, and then said owner or other persons wanted to repurchase the truck from the ins. co. then they issuse a salvage title.

That means you CANNOT get a tag or legaly drive it on the street... until it is recertified by a licensed auto rebuilder. Check your states requirements for what it takes to get it recertified and retitled.

I just went through this problem for a buddy on a 94 2500, was wrecked, repurchased w/salvage title, and then repaired by me for him. In AL the law says only a liscensed rebuilder with a 10,000$ insurance bond and proper paperwork can do the repair and be recertified.

So I get it done, repainted and everything, he then goes to Mississippi and gets it retitled. I was not in on who or where he went to get that done but he came back with a good title and tag.

Do some research on your states rules and regs about the process before buying a truck you will have trouble getting legal to drive.

Sounds like it would be a good deal if it had a clear title but I don't think 14k for a salvage title is a good price. If it has current tags I don't think the above post would be of any concern. Eric

Thewished, who were you talking about that will do a free carfax for me? That would be really nice. The truck is in TX and I'm in KY, so doing a carfax report before I go to TX would be awesome. The seller says the only damage is the busted column (which has been fixed).

I wouldn't worry about Salvage title at all. If truck was stolen insurance will brand vehicle as salvage even if it has NO damage at all, this is for any vehicle in any state, it's the insurance company that decides it.
You might have to go through an inspection to re-license the vehicle, changing states might "clear" title but vin will be ALWAYS marked, regardless of what title says. So if anybody tries to sell a vehicle with a "washed" title they will get caught at any VIN inspection or check.
Carfax will tell you there has been an accident and the vin marked but it won't tell you what was the accident, nobody will except original owner, not even the insurance company.

$ 14,000 for a 6 speed with 81,000 miles is a steal, I wouldn't think twice at buying it

hey just some advice. im from louisiana and i used to work for a very large ins co earlier this year. as for the law in la it states that the damages of the vehicle must reach or exceed 75% of the nada value at the time of the accident, theft or whatever happened. they will not just do what they want, it is state specific on laws. if just the steering column was damaged, i doubt that would total a truck like that. i would be leery and do some homework. sometimes if it sounds too good to be true, than it might be. also, when a vehicle has a salvaged title in la, the way to derive a value is take the nada at that time and deduct 40% of it for salvage. this vehicle in la would be worth 60% of the nada.
just my two cents, hope it helps.

No doubts, when a vehicle is stolen it is reported as Salvage, period.

Louisiana has some special laws, which actually are Federal, regarding salvage since there has been thousands of Kathrina flood vehicles trying to get sold.
These were not just flood, but salt water and worst than everything Biohazard damaged vehicles, people died of bacterial shock working over them trying to repair, since all the water in the flood was contaminated with sewer and waste waters.
In my opinion they should have been all destroyed locally, not even sold to scrappers.
